Why we have to append the S_MATNR values to r_matnr (ranges). Why can't we use S_MATNR directly in the SELECT statement ?

I tried this and I get messages that my import fields cannot be used in the RANGES LIKE LINE OF and cannot be converted to the row type of the import field
