A pleasure to watch this one again. Not only for the brilliant Alan Arkin, may he rest in peace, but for the intelligent, informed questions posed by Bob Costas.

A great loss, a wonderful actor gone. He was extraordinarily versatile, and outstanding at anything he did. Bob Costas - as always, making this a lively and interesting conversation.

The Russians are Coming was an absolute masterpiece and Alan Arkin was so fabulous, convincing and naturally funny. When he talks about being "in character" that applies to any performer - whether a singer, concert pianist or instrumentalist. Alan Arkin had the nuances, the X-factor, which defines true greatness.

Wow. Such great questions to ask a master craftsman/artist/actor/movie star. So well prepared & thought out. Well, yeah. It's Bob Costas. R.I.P. Alan Arkin. I loved your work & I loved your book.

10:09 - “When you see someone like … Eddie Murphy ….” Dang! Little did Costas know that, 17 years later, Murphy would be Arkin’s main competitor when he finally earned his Oscar for a brilliant comedic performance (Little Miss Sunshine).

Great interview. Glad to see the nod to Steven Hill. You may have recognized him from the clip shown from Running on Empty, but he is best known for playing the District Attorney for years on Law and Order.

I loved him in so many films. 'Freebie and the Bean' was always fun to watch. Can't believe they are gone...

We are losing all the greats. He made yossarian come to life in catch 22 . A movie he probably hated freebie and the bean with James caan watching the two of them go back and forth is on a par with him and Peter Falk in the in laws amazing talent.

Not too big of a fan of Freebie and The Bean, despite really liking the cast; Arkin, Caan, and Valerie Harper. But I really appreciated Catch 22! I know it wasn't successful, but I thought it was impressive. Arkin was excellent in the lead, and what a fine supporting cast. Heller's book was better, but the film rocks. Imho. I think audiences unfairly compared it to Mash. I believe Mike Nichols alluded to that at one point. Both quality films, though.

Hey Alan, lighten up already about “Wait Until Dark.”
Yes, your character wasn’t a terribly nice guy, but it’s a movie, and you did a great job acting in it.
Costas is an excellent interviewer, but he should have asked Arkin if any specific preparation went into portraying that psycho character.
I always enjoyed Arkin as an actor and read his autobiography.
Most of it anyway. I know he had a sense of humor, but he was too damn serious about everything all the time.

Interesting the Arkin should rate Steven Hill so highly. He was superb playing Adam Schiff on Law & Order. He's no slouch himself, Alan. I liked him in Popi, one of his lesser known roles.

Arkin was an annoying presence in film. His style of delivery was flat and one dimensional.
He was an actor that had no ability to be a human chameleon. You hired him to play Alan Arkin.
A bumbling 'everyday man' out of his depth. If you like that... great, Arkin was a genius at playing himself.
