I'm Russian, and I swear this whole movie could have been made in the USSR, just by switching the sides and language. It just looks so much like a typical 1960/70's soviet comedy movie, overall in setting and the way it's filmed. Kind of reminds us how similar the both sides actually were.

Rest in peace, Mr. Arkin. You were one of the greatest -- a superb actor and a fine human being. Thanks for all the wonderful films.

Alan Arkin was so good in this movie. People talk about John Law and he's nice looking, sure, but Arkin just commands the screen throughout the film. Not surprised he got so many nominations for the role. I keep coming back to this film just to enjoy his performance. And I think it was his first screen appearance? Just so good.

This movie was filmed in my hometown of Fort Bragg Ca and surrounding areas of Mendocino. They filmed one scene across the street from my house for a couple days all the actors even if they were not in the scene seemed to be there my mom baked cookies for all them. That group of actors Keith, Winters, Arkin, Law and the rest of them were so gracious and friendly to all of us. If I remember correctly the submarine was put together in Noyo Harbor and was made of Styrofoam blocks around a metal frame with a couple outboard motors for power.

RIP, Mr. Reiner....before the famous "My Name's Whittaker.." scene and then Arkin calls Carl "Whittaker Walt" for the remainder of the film. Priceless!

My favorite comedy of all times. So many laughs. From very subtle to almost slapstick. A good, clean, non vulgar comedy from back in the good old days of America. To this day, one of the best endings in movie history ( The boy at the church. ) which never fails to make me tear up.

What a bold movie for its time and the tensions during the Cold War.

Alan Arkin is a 'god' of comedic performances in this movie. I can't get past 1 minute of interchanges between him and Carl Reiner and family without breaking up laughing and hitting <PAUSE>.

What a great movie! I hadn't seen it for decades and I saw it again just yesterday. I loved it once again, laughter came so naturally, no need for dirty jokes as most of the films now use. ...and the tall blonde Russian boy was as handsome as I remembered him when I first saw him many years ago!
