Planes, Trains and Automobiles - A Watch for a Room: Neal (Steve Martin) and Del (John Candy) bargain with a motel clerk for a room.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Easily excitable Neal Page (Steve Martin) is somewhat of a control freak. Trying to get home to Chicago to spend Thanksgiving with his wife (Laila Robins) and kids, his flight is rerouted to a distant city in Kansas because of a freak snowstorm, and his sanity begins to fray. Worse yet, he is forced to bunk up with talkative Del Griffith (John Candy), whom he finds extremely annoying. Together they must overcome the insanity of holiday travel to reach their intended destination.

The way Del displays the Casio on his arm, like a rare jewel, priceless. John Candy was the absolute best at his craft.

Neil's watch is a Piaget Polo 18K Gold Quartz. It's value currently floats between $2, 000-$22, 000. That motel clerk surely made a huge profit which paid for some of the damages they caused later...but then again, he didn't own the place

Forgive me if I'm pointing out the obvious here, but on my most recent viewing of this movie, I realized the significance of Neil trading his watch for a room: Neil's whole character is his impatience. He wants to get through everything as quickly and comfortably as possible, gets pissy with people (mostly service workers) when he can't and has zero foresight for anything potentially going wrong, unlike Del, who's always resourceful and tries to have a good rapport with everyone he meets, especially service workers. All of the drama between him and Del comes from how much Del tests what little patience he has. The literal first shot of Neil on screen is him checking his watch and looking at plane tickets. Neil giving up his watch, the thing that ALLOWS him to be impatient, just so he can have a warm play to stay for the night, shows how desperate he is.

This movie was a classic. John Candy & Steve Martin were golden boys for their roles.

Neal : Please. Have mercy. I've been wearing the same underwear since Tuesday.
Del : I can vouch for that. 😅😂😂😂

Rocking that sweet A159. I bet that baby is still vibrating unlike the Piaget. A true Horological treasure.

This scene is so great that I ended up getting basically Del's watch, but an updated variant. If anyone is curious about it, it's the Casio A-158, but honestly, the upgraded version, the A-168, is way nicer. A bit bigger in a good way, cheaper most of the time, and the backlight is really good.

Edit: As @baldilocks1914 points out rightly in the comments, the actual watch in the film is the W-34. Sadly no long in production.

I love how Neil gave up a watch that likely cost hundreds of dollars for one night in a motel 😂

It's Donald Gennaro before he became a lawyer, he worked at a motel as he paved his way through law school.
