The reality of living in Hong Kong's densest apartments | Instagram Famous 'Monster Building'

Hong Kong is famous for its density of population. The famous concrete jungle Monster Building is a perfect reflection of dense housing in a megapolis. As probably the most Instagrammed site, it meets tourists all around the world every day. But have you wondered what it's like to live in it as a real resident?
Well, luckily I have a chance to present to you what I see from living in one of the small apartments out of the concrete giant.

1. Do you still live there?
2. Did both of you live in that apartment?
No, it was rented solely by my boyfriend. I lived in another apartment but I often visited him.
3. How much was the rent?
The rent was USD 1,000 (HKD 7,800) per month.
4. How big was the apartment?
The landlord separated one apartment into two studios. Our studio was 140 ft² (13 m²).
5. Did you have a bathroom?
Yes we had our own bathroom in the studio. Not shared.
6. Where is it?
Quarry Bay, east Hong Kong island.
7. How old are the buildings?
They were built in the 60s.
8. How many people live in there?
The five blocks consist of 2243 apartments and can house 10,000 people.

This was very skillfully done. In less than ten minutes you managed to make me not only understand the space but also make me feel like as if I myself had lived there. Honestly, if you're a single person who is a student or is starting out your career, this is such a great place. The small studio forces you outside, which makes you interact with your neighbors and store owners.

I lived in a 12x10 studio with my partner for over 5 years. It was a challenge at times, especially because he is 6ft4 but you find happiness in your own way of life and do the best you can! Take pride in what you’ve accomplished 💕 and take care!

This gives me chills not only because of the building itself, but also because of the style in which the author presents. Her voice is calm, tone-hopping yet monotonous, just like in Possibly in Michigan. And the building looks quite liminal (additionally, there are way less people in the hallways than I could expect to walk here), unsettling and out of this world. This is kinda hypnotizing

There is something comforting in seeing the same faces everyday (grandpas and grandmas playing and talking, women and men who do laundry, grocery)... this is what some people wish for in the US- to know neighbors and to feel safe. Your home- inside and out- is cheerful, calming and feels like home!

I feel like the internet makes this place seem like some horror show crawling with bugs and disease. But it is actually a lot more pleasant on the inside than you would think. Coming from someone living in a "trashed" narrow apartment building in downtown tokyo, it really is a case of "don't judge the book by it's cover"
