Not ALWAYS lifters. Seen video that shows injectors making the same type sound. Or exhaust bolts loose/broken. But as stated here: Oil oil oil- quality oil and timely changes

By the time it gets to this point it's too late, the lifter is collapsed. the way to avoid this in the first place is you have to change the hell out of the oil on the LS engines. it is also a popular trick to run 1 qt of Marvel Mystery oil, or even transmission fluid in the oil pan at all times with the oil. those are high in detergent, that keeps the orifice holes on the lifter clear and really does prevent this from happening. that's what I do. no valvetrain noises in my 2011 Vortec with over 130K.

Just stay away from jiffy lube or other quick lube places and do oil change right way regularly. No lifter issues guarantee

And DO NOT over torque those valve cover bolts !!! If you don’t have a torque wrench, it’s best to be a little loose and slowly tighten as needed

Do you need to check the cam? Or could you go ahead and just replace the lifter?
