What happened to Titanic's sister ship?

Few people know that the Titanic actually had an identical sister ship called the Olympic.

White Star Line, the company that owned both ships, was supposedly facing financial difficulties because of a collision that the Olympic had with Royal Navy Warship HMS Hawk in September 1911, which caused considerable damage.

The repair costs were enormous and, due to a technicality, insurance did not cover them.

Some people believe that in order to recover from this financial blow, the company swapped the identities of the two ships and intentionally sank the damaged "Olympic" disguised as the "Titanic" to claim the insurance money.

That argument is also dismantled by the fact that, the titanic and the olympic were only docked in the same port for a short period of time, it would have taken an incredible amount of manpower and time, and everyone who participated or knew wouldve had to keep their mouths shut for the rest of their lives. Not to mention the letters TITANIC inscribed into the side arent detachable, they ingraved the shape of the letters and painted the inside.

Edit: To all the people trying to pick apart what I said. Do some actual research. One dude just said "False information son" without providing any context. If you can't do simple research and just try to say I'm wrong without any substantial evidence, please don't reproduce. We need less of you.

If you go the wreck of the titanic on its various machinery, you will find the numbers 401 titanic’s yard number, Olympics was 400. Sure you could switch out the bells and the life boats but not the machinery as titanic and Olympic only had about six weeks together in port

"Few people know that the titanic had a similar looking sister ship" Millions of people knew and the olympic and the titanic have a difference in the windows, titanics A deck promenade has small windows but olympics a deck promenade has larger windows and another thing, you cant switch out the names of the ships on the bow and scratch the paint because the name of the ship is pressed into the hull

I once read that had the Titanic hit the iceberg head on, it would have caused frontal damage, but it would not have sank and they would have made it to New York. But by swerving to the side to avoid the iceberg the hull hit it anyway and all the compartments filled with water sinking the ship. What a horrible fate!

No!!! I hate it when people talk about this conspiracy theory!
There are many reasons why this was not able to happen!

1. Shipyard Construction and Distinctive Features:
The construction of both the Olympic and Titanic took place at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland. Each ship had a unique identification number, with the Olympic designated as 400 and the Titanic as 401. The construction records, including blueprints, photographs, and contemporary accounts, clearly differentiate the two vessels. Furthermore, the Olympic was launched more than a year before the Titanic, making it implausible to switch the two ships unnoticed.

2. Structural Differences:
The Olympic and Titanic had several structural differences that can be identified through photographs and eyewitness testimonies. The most notable distinction was the placement of the forward "C" deck windows. On the Olympic, the forward windows were evenly spaced, while on the Titanic, the forward windows were irregularly spaced due to a change in design. This variation is consistent with the timeframe in which the Titanic was constructed, further negating the switch theory.

3. Sister Ship Operations:
The Olympic and Titanic were sister ships designed to operate in tandem, contributing to White Star Line's reputation for luxury and safety. Both ships went through a rigorous testing and certification process before entering service. The Olympic, which entered service in 1911, had already completed numerous successful transatlantic crossings before the Titanic's ill-fated voyage. If the switch theory were true, it would imply that the Olympic had been disguised as the Titanic throughout its service, which is highly unlikely.

4. Passenger and Crew Testimonies:
Passenger and crew testimonies provide further evidence against the switch theory. Numerous individuals who traveled on both the Olympic and Titanic have given accounts of the distinctive features and characteristics of each ship. Their descriptions consistently align with the historical records, ruling out the possibility of a switch. Additionally, the crew members who served on both vessels were familiar with the unique layout and design of their respective ships, further discrediting the theory.

5. Investigations and Inquiries:
Multiple official investigations and inquiries were conducted following the Titanic disaster, including the British and American inquiries. These inquiries analyzed the evidence, interviewed survivors, and scrutinized the actions of the White Star Line. None of these investigations found any evidence to support the switch theory. The inquiries' findings focused on factors such as the lack of lifeboats, inadequate safety procedures, and the collision with the iceberg, highlighting the real causes of the tragedy.

While this theory is great for conspiracy’s. This simply cannot be true, for one as already mentioned in the comments, the names were stamped in, including the number 401 (Titanic’s serial number for all of the parts used to construct her) that are still visible on the wreck to this day. The overall reason it was sunk was due to negligence and the reason for such a high death toll was due to ignorance.

The Titanic and Olympic did not switch places. First off the Olympic and Titanic where not identical, if you look closely you can see the difference. Also, when Titanic was being built ALL of her pieces where marked with the number 401. When a piece of the Titanic's hull was raised they where able to match the number on the piece with the Titanic hull number.

To dodge the insurance of some relatively small damage, they decided to sink an entire ship and kill over 1000 people instead, leading to even more lawsuits and damages. Genius idea!

Ah, the good old 'Switch Theory'.

However, the theory is false, one one of the propellers on the wreck of the Titanic has her serial number '401' engraved into it.

It is impossible that they were switched as titanic had the letters etched into her hull, they are still visible today.

The amount of money that they had to spend to pay the crew probably costed more than the insurance money.

On the day of April 10, 1912, the R.M.S Titanic had set sail from Southampton to New York. On April 10, 1912, The R.M.S Olympic was being repaired after it lost one of its propeller blades on February 24, 1912 heading to New York.

Swapping both ships would be impossible since it took 2 weeks for the R.M.S Olympic to get fully repaired.

Ships have hull number like engine and chassis number. Olympic had the hull number of 400, Titanic had 401 for being constructed later to her sister. The wreck has 401 written in many of its places.

The names are etched into the ship, and the olympic and titanic had some differences like the titanic having closed promenades

As a titanic historian that has been studying the titanic for over a YEAR now, I can confirm that this was all just one complete lie

That’s pretty much saying they rammed the ice berg and made the people die and also it’s not true, they were at the same dock for 1 day to take a photo with all 3 because at the time Britannic had been made but with original paint.

The Olympic and Titanic both had their names and builder numbers (400 and 401 respectively) engraved into their hull. Pieces of wreckage with the number 401 have been found at the Titanic's wreck site, so they could not have possibly been switched.

Also the picture used to depict the Titanic sinking is actually of the Lusitania

If the titanic never sank it would still be around and expensive

The Titanic’s Name was etched in the metal hull

Then if the ship was swapped, The captain would not have gone down with the ship if it was planned😅
