Subtypes of schizophrenia: different diseases within the same diagnosis

Hi thanks for watching this video about subtype of schizophrenia.

Variable patterns of response to antipsychotic medications suggest that the modern definition of schizophrenia (a definition based only on behavioral or psychological symptoms) actually encompasses several, distinctly-different underlying biochemical diseases.

The idea that there are several schizophrenias, each with its own biochemical origin, was suggested more than 100 years ago. This presentation will review several lines of evidence that seem to confirm the original view that several underlying disorders are producing similar top-level symptoms. This can explain why some individuals with schizophrenia will respond very well to a particular medication while others may not respond at all – even though they have the same diagnosis.
