Just got drunk after work, noticed the flush handle didn't have any resistance, and saw the toilet kept filling and draining at the same time. Thank you so freaking much for this. Turned out the chain connecting the flapper and the flush handle thing fell off and my drunk arse wouldn't have noticed without this video.

Decided I would play “hero” and attempt this fix while my husband was away on business for a week. First I was splashed in the face when attempting to wet vac the water out of the tank. I still have no idea how that happened, but the disgusted recoil look on my face must have been priceless. Next the wet vac decided to suddenly reverse suction therefore spraying brown tank toilet water all over my bathroom and of course me again because it only got my face the first time. In the end it all came together nicely and I saved quite a bit of cash on a plumber. But seriously, who would have thought the wet vac would have been the arch enemy here and biggest hurdle?

Instead of replacing the fill valve, try flushing it out. Turn off water, unscrew cap, hold a cup over the remaining fill valve, turn water on for several seconds to flush out any sediment, turn water off, scrub cap w toothbrush (or soak in vinegar), screw cap back on.
