June is Lipedema Awareness month and although I am A Lipedema Awareness Advocate all yeart long, I felt this small snippet needed to be shared more widely.
#representationmatters and as a woman who spent years of her life hiding these thick thighs in fear of offending anyone, including myself, I have given to taking a more compassionate route in accepting myself fully and I am encouraging you to do the same. Wear the bathing suit, wear the shorts, show up in life for yourself and your loved ones.
Stress is one of the contributors to Lipedema that should be reduced.
Choose to retrain your thinking and show yourself some kindness. I'm pretty sure your body did not ask for this chronic illness and would appreciate any live you can show it.
Lipedema affects at least 370 Million women worldwide...1 in 9 are affected with this connective tissue disease that has a hereditary component and typically shows up as an additional layer of diseased fat from the waist down and often in the arms, too, during Puberty, Pregnancy and Menopause. Hallmarks include easy bruising on the the affected areas/limbs, nodular texture below the skin, heavy feeling tissue/limbs, resistance to diet and exercise, feelings of exhaustion and swelling.
Currently, there is no cure yet conservative measures such as wearing compression, anti-inflammatory nutrition, regular movement (pool & strength training are fantastic), dry brushing, and whole body vibration to name a few. Surgical intervention by a Lipedema Specialist to remove the diseased adipose tissue has helped some yet new research is still needed to develop additional options.
Please reach out for additional resources. I love to connect with my Lipedema sisters.
