SURF TIPS: How to drop in on BIG waves

Surfing large waves can be on of the largest adrenaline rushes to a surfer...when it's done right.
For this episode I cover a more advanced topic, dropping in correctly on big waves. But keep in mind that surfing big waves is for intermediate to advanced surfers. Don't rush into big waves if you're not experienced, it will not go well.
Thanks for watching. I'm Brad Jacobson and I'll see ya on the sand.

something i've learned in my very short (two years) of surfing is that i watch so many videos like this but when you're actually looking down the face of an 8ft wave it looks like its 20ft and all of the planning goes out the window 😂

This is awesome. The #1 thing I like watching in surfing is takeoffs. And for some reason, surf movies love cutting that part out.

Made some minor adjustments from this video, particularly driving the board down more aggressively in this big nor cal swell- got in earlier and was able to set my line instead of getting smashed as often. Snagged some great ones.

Thanks legend!

Love the side by side of a make and a miss from the same day.

Great technical breakdown, Brad. Go big...and charge.

5:50, it seems to me that the steeper the wave, the faster the pop up but as important is the angling of the take off so not to loose contact with the face of the wave and the rail of the board. Each wave has a different speed and thus more or less time to angle and take off, I must stay on waves that related to my skill level, will allow me to take off properly. Thanks for the videos! I really enjoy them!

7:15, 15:40 you may have just solved my biggest problem. Delaying my takeoff by a bit because momentum loss. So I I always end up dropping in bit late when i should already be down the line. I suppose planing position isnt optimal, and as you said, not pushing the board down enough. Going to emphasize this today.

Whats interesting is that a lot of other videos say the steeper the wave the more you need to take off at an angle, but maybe that applies more to long boards

Always wondered how much experience these guys have on average to ride big waves. Do you need to master shortboard first to start surfing big waves? What’s the roadmap here?

Can you surf on small waves? Or does your injury makes you totally unable to surf?
