Nice video. I am 50 years old, have been living in Costa Rica for over 20 years. I ride a short board and always considered myself an above average surfer. A couple years ago I had a sever elbow injury. In the time I have been out of the water I have gained some weight (from 150lbs to about 170lbs now) and had become fairly inactive. After returning to the water I have had a very difficult time popping up. Sometimes getting my front foot stuck or just not getting my feet into proper position. It has become so frustrating I don't even want to surf. I am going to try these techniques and hopefully it helps and I can get my stoke back. Pura Vida!

Started surfing at the age of 12 and I am now in my 50"s. I had a hip replacement a year ago and I have found my hips dont allow my old pop up. It is very frustrating to look down the line and your brain knows what to do but your body holds you back. I am going to try some of these tips. Not surfing is not an option and I am not ready for stand up but for you young guys give the older stand up guys a break. Its going to be you one day

Used to surf pro in California. Always on a sub 6’4” or 5’11” trad fish. Whoops, I turned 71. Hit the surf mat but now I want to kneepaddle an 8’ downwinder foil board. Looks like I need some of your retraining. ❤

Ashtanga Yoga Sun Salutation A&B are worth looking into. I'm 60yrs and still on a short board and have found this series of exercises beneficial for pop ups . These tips are great for milking a little extra out of already learnt techniques. As for the Yoga, take it easy and never push it as it's suppose to be moving meditation.

Right on with hip flexibility being key. I’m 46 and just spent two days surfing in Costa Rica. Last time I surfed I was 39 and did really well. I spent the first day in CR jamming my back big toe and scraping top of my front foot while trying to pop up because poor hip flexibility. The older you are the more time you should allow for warm up and stretching. Hand placement is huge too, nice tips.

Something id like to add is when you push yourself up to stand up, youre giving yourself clearance for your legs to get under you but your also using your arms to keep tour board from lifting up. You have to keep your board on level plane. If the nose of your board lifts you will have a harder time continuing catching the wave. 🤙

Excellent - can not wait to try it out in the surf. Slow and smooth is fast. Pushing up into cobra position and twisting (leaning into the direction you want to go) at the same time - was an eye opener for me. It was so smooth and effortless. My head remained high and I was on my feet in one smooth move! Thanks for sharing!!

I've never done pop ups with my hands on the deck. Always had them gripping the rails. Have kinda dropped out of surfing over the last few years, but been doing it that way for about 50 years and it's always worked for me.

So good, I just tried a few variations and I'm blown away by the difference each individual tip made. Nice job working them out and explaining it so well. Thanks!

I never really thought about where I placed my hands backing them up a little bit does make sense and also changing which ones a little forward to which way I’m going. Also makes sense I just never really thought about it.

That hand/shoulder tip was fantastic. I used to always keep my hands in line, now i line up my hand slightly forward in favour of the front shoulder... Simple, yet brilliant... Thank you...

I just started surfing at 53. Didn’t realize how immobile my hips were, and having issues popping my knees through. Going to definitely use the uneven hands trick, and I like that you’re goofy-footed like me. Thanks!

Bodyboarder here for 36 years, but I've decided to learn how to surf. I have been learning how to pop up properly, but it gets confusing sometimes. Your videos are always amazing and full of great tips, thank you! I'm going to Hawaii this December, and I'm hoping to get this right 😆!!!
