Well keep in mind, he didn't KNOW he was going to run into Shanks so quickly. While I'm sure Kidd wanted revenge for his arm, really it was just more of a gamble (if he won, he'd have a straight shot to Laughtale). Kidd was feeling himself since, to his credit he was able to withstand multiple attacks from Big Mom. Also, Shanks himself mentions that Kidd's attack was too powerful, Shanks saw that Kidd had the potential to one shot Shank's entire fleet. Kidd had every right to be confident, but I believe Shanks is the type who fights much more seriously when his friends are in danger leaving Kidd completely outclassed.

Kid is not the fool people think he is. He joined the raid to take out Kaido, but settled for half-credit on Big Mom because he was the first to acknowledge that they couldn’t be beaten while together. What is it about Shanks that makes Kid throw all reason out the window? Shanks definitely wronged him, same as Apoo did! Apoo was the first time so far we saw Kid being truly reckless!
