Getting up for school was never an easy task. And for teens who need extra sleep, that's especially true. Laci reports on the science that argues all teens should be allowed to hit snooze and sleep in.

School Start Time and Sleep
"Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise," said Ben Franklin. But does this adage apply to teenagers?"

Adolescence and the Brain
"In making "Inside the Teenage Brain," we seemed to hit a nerve -- a parental one -- when we began looking into the world of teenagers and how they sleep. The patterns that young teens seemed to be experiencing -- an inability to go to sleep at night, followed by profound drowsiness on waking -- seemed so pervasive that it should come as no a surprise that what parents were seeing at home had already been corroborated in university sleep labs at Stanford and Brown."
EDUCATION CHIEF: MAYBE START SCHOOL LATER IN DAY
"A later start to the school day could help teenagers get the most from their classroom time and local districts should consider delaying the first bell, Education Secretary Arne Duncan said Wednesday."

When Worlds Collide: Adolescent Need for Sleep Versus Societal Demands
"Given that the primary focus of education is to maximize human potential, then a new task before us is to ensure that the conditions in which learning takes place address the very biology of our learners, Ms. Carskadon points out."

School is no doubt important but the way it's set up is honestly so ass. As the video stated students rarely get enough sleep, which is very damaging to the health. Teachers assign hours of homework and tests which require hours of studying at times and still expect you to be involved in clubs, sports, community service, etc. then they say "get a lot of rest for exams." Or something. Wtf?!

Push the hours back! School, you teach science, you teach health, you tell us to get 8-10 hours of sleep, and yet you still start at 7 or 8am in the morning! Add into that the hours of homework we get, plus after school clubs and extracurriculars we might do as students and schools are still wondering why students are skipping breakfast and not getting enough sleep.

Forget 8:30. Start at like, 10. or 11. It's not like I could ever get up and go straight to school anyway. Bus arrived at 7, walk to the bus took about 10 minutes. So our school started at about 8:15 but I'd have to get up at 6:20. I fell asleep in multiple classes daily and even got yelled at for it, and meanwhile I couldn't fall asleep until around 1am at the earliest. Now I'm in college and just skip every single morning class.

I feel like schools should serve the students to help them reach their full potential, but it feels more like they try to heard us like cattle and treat us like unintelligent children.

What the hell is wrong in America? School in the UK starts at like 8:45

But even then, seems like most people don't get more than 6 hours, ever

Have the students vote. (at least for middle and high school) Its the students who will be affected the most.

You've got to get to school at 7 o'clock!? And I thought 9 was unreasonable.

school, it needs to start at ten... just waking up at 8:00, sleeping in another half hour, shower till nine, breakfast till quarter past, footwear and medical purposes till half nine and then off to school feels so much better

School has my sleep so fucked up. Like the only really effective way for me to even get up and get to school on time (my classes start at 8) is to stay awake all night and then just crash on the couch for hours when I get home.

I can't seem to fall asleep before 12-1am, no matter how hard I try(like going to bed at 10pm). and I have to get up at 7:20. But like, right after school, I feel exahusted, like I could go to sleep. But why doesn't that exhaution carry over to when I actually go to sleep at night? Why am I suddenly awake?

Yes I especially noticed this when I started college, I started school and 9:30 instead of 7:30 and I haven't felt the need to take naps after school unlike in HS as soon as I got home I went straight to bed.
