Charlton Heston walked out saying “what a crock of shit”

My uncle took me to see 2001 at the Cinerama theatre in Tampa the first weekend it was in town. I was absolutely blown away by the cinematography. Yes it was hard to understand but I have loved it since 1968.

Those boring meetings must have been a hoot on acid.

I've been lucky to have watched this movie at different stages of my life. First when I was like 10 really didn't get it at all, didn't like it. Then when I was 17, had a grasp of what it was about, thought it was pretentious tho. Enjoyed it immensely in my mid 20's, thought it was stunning and thought provoking. Now I'm in my early 30's so its about time I watch it again apparently. See if I can "get it" a bit more 😂

I was five years old and our parents, my brother and mine put us in the back of the station wagon with a sleeping bag and took us to a drive-in theater where they were showing a double feature of 2001 a space Odyssey and Barbarella. All I really remember was a lot of chimps and a woman getting eaten by some really tall child looking dolls. I considered that a nightmare at the time.

The 1st time I saw this movie I was 11 and understood it completely (anyone with a minimal of imagination and science background can do it). To me it is the most important movie ever made.
Have 6 dvd copies of it.

This is exactly the kind of performance enhancer that made the premiere of Episode I: The Phantom Menace enjoyable for me, and it premiered on my birthday.

Straight up, it is a weird movie. If it wasn't ground breaking in so many other ways, it would have been forgotten, like how 2010 was sadly. 2010 has a far more understandable story executed well, but was not groundbreaking enough in its use of visual storytelling.

Journey of man. From Ape to Astronaut to potential Spiritual Entity (Star child) The monolith is a message from an infinitely high power or aliens? (Same ones who put David in the zoo-like room to watch him age)

What a trip. I think that was the tagline the sold the movie. Kubrick films always need time to grow on you and then you can never get them out of your mind

My favorite part was The Blue Danube Waltz played in its entirety.

Hollywood and moviegoers back then are too accustomed by making/seeing films that are either musicals and/or stage dramas, basically films with dialogue, in contrast, Kubrick is selling an EXPERIENCE.

I understand the story the first time I saw this, and never read the book.

like at every premiere you had either half the audience walk out or half of them faint in the aisles.

The movie is a blank canvas experience. It was meant to present the audience with more questions than give answers like most movies do.
Yes, there is a simple plot of man journeying from non-speaking beast to venturing forth unto the stars thru the gift of intellect and just how far that curiosityis pushed, even questionedby outside beings unlike ourselves. But the beauty of the film is that to each individual viewer the sights and meanings are uniquely different to help unfold the visual surreal experience you're viewing. Giving a feeling to each viewer to feel something within themselves while viewing this experience.

It was meant to make you think. It's a visual brain teaser. Keeping you guessing why and what is the meaning of the imagery you're viewing. It was not made to have a direct plot. It takes you on a visual and auditory experience that weaves and winds thru slow backroads of storytelling to give you more questions to ponder about the landscape passing by but also to where are you going ultimately?

I had no idea that the 2001 book was a novelization. I always thought the book came first. Ugh…

I know what Arthur C. Clark said and I know he expanded the novel, but I did not know about the walkouts.
