How do you be yourself amid social pressure? Why do stereotypes exist?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are reacting to Disney Channel classic, High School Musical. They’re taking a look at being yourself in the face of social expectations. Jonathan talks about stereotypes and the dynamics of friendship. Alan points out legitimately good filmmaking elements of High School Musical, and they talk about why they unironically enjoy this movie.

I love the logic of the friends in this movie, "you can't join the musical, here's a song explaining why."

My only complaint about this movie is that they show us Bop to the Top and then try and force us to believe that it's not the greatest thing to ever happen on a stage

15:00 I always found it kind of funny because Coach Bolton is acting like the worst thing that could ever happen is his son being great at multiple things. "Oh no, Troy's a well-rounded individual! This is AWFUL!" 😂

"It's cheesy as hell, and it knows it's cheesy as hell... and I love it" and that is how Kenny Ortega defined the childhoods of basically all millennial theater kids 😂

Y’all need to do a movie on Sharpay and Ryan, specifically on how their characters change through the films, with Sharpay learning to share the spotlight with others and Ryan becoming his own person outside of Sharpay. Their dynamic goes from codependent and borderline abusive to healthy and supportive and it’s great!

The freaking multi-paragraph essay on how Sharpay is the best character put in by the editor was so brave and so real

Jono saying "or, or, or, or" and editor showing a seal at the same time, made me laugh out loud for almost an minute 😂

“Gabriella is like the human equivalent of a Wanderlust bumper sticker on a Toyota Corolla” might be one of the greatest sentences I have ever read in my life… bravo editor!!!

Alan: "She can't even let him (Ryan) say the thing she is thinking." is hilarious is retrospect because you muted him while Sharpay was singing. 😂💀

My sociology professor LOVED this movie for its depiction of social fabric and he used an entrie 2 hour lecture on just recounting the entire plot and putting it into a sociological perspective. It was one of my best lectures 😂

That was a passionate editor's note. And I respect it 😂

I personally can't wait to see Alan and Jono analyze the scene where Ryan and Chad wear eachothers clothes in HSM2

What I like about High School Musical, all of them, is that they're movies that aren't ashamed or scared to just have the energy of those cheesy sitcoms from the 90's to early 2000's. It's honestly really nice having a series of films that fully embrace being bombastic, silly and cheesy but are still willing to tone it down when the scene calls for it.

There's a fan theory that Troy's dad was a teen dad and that is why he is so concerned about Troy taking college scholarships seriously and afraid of a girl coming in and distracting him.

4:21 this “brief note” is everything. It reminds us that just because someone is the antagonist, that doesn’t mean they’re the villain. I hope you do the other two movies and more dcoms in general

The fact that this movie is unintentionally an invective against the inflated importance placed on high school sports and its negative psychological effects on youths
