Hi, this video pertains to self- manipulating and should not be confused with a trained professional.

During my practice of trauma nursing I have had many patients suffering stokes from vertebral artery tears. Once a roller coaster, once a football game and others having been to chiropractors. I appreciate chiropractors, but caution everyone - our necks should not be cracked. Natural cracking is far less vigorous, the neck will work itself out. Better to get a good shoulder massage. Thanks for your work Dr.Mandell

I've been cracking my neck for 30 plus years. This may be the video to scare me off doing it.

I heard this story yesterday about male 28 years old from Oklahoma state, cracked his neck caused ruptured a vital artery leading to a stroke, in addition to the left-sided paralysis and deterioration of mobility, also he suffered from vision problems as the injury affected a group of his nerves and had to wear a band on one eye.

There are many good Chiropractors out there in practice, but with any profession, there are those that are not sure of what they are doing. A Chiropractor I believe damaged my neck when cracking it forcefully, that didn't show up until years later. I won't let them do that ever again! Years ago, CBS 60 Minutes did a story about a Chiropractor that caused a stroke in a young woman and was sued. I can't recall if she died or not. There are cases where this happens even if a professional Chiropractor cracks your neck, but not often otherwise they would make it illegal. So beware at your own risk!

I popped my neck purposely laying in bed one night and didn’t really think much of it. What I didn’t realize was that in the process I had dissected my vertebral artery in my neck. A couple nights later the blood clots broke loose and travelled to three locations in my brain. Got up to get a glass of water and told my wife my right side feels sort of like the feeling when your arm falls “asleep” from laying in it, tingly, etc. then my vision began to go. My wife insisted we go to the hospital ASAP as it seemed I was having a stroke. I said “the hell I am, I’m fine, it will go away, ” but I was wrong, she was right. I spent the next three days in ICU. My wife and I have been married for 30 years, have seven children, and four wonderful grandchildren! Laying in ICU for that time affords one the time to reflect on the important things in life. Suffice it to say, I no longer pop my neck!! The scary thing is that it can be hard to connect the triggering event “dot” (neck pop) to the resulting stroke by a couple days, along with the perceived belief that popping ones neck is harmless.

Thank you for the great advice. I have never done this on my own. I have a chiropractor do it. I got scared at first when you said that, but then looked at your answer below, so thank you once again. I have seen family and friends do this, so I will try to share this with everyone who is not on face book.

Good points! Never do neck rolls either! Just stretch side to side holding the chair and easily let gravity help relieve compression. Go to a good chiropractor!!

If you live in Tacoma Washington, a great chiropractor office is Renaissance Chiropractic. They are the only ones that have been able to set the Atlas in my neck for relief from several car accidents dating back to 1978. I went regularly for a while but I'm in maintenance mode now. I had tried going to about 30 different chiropractors between 1978 to present time of 2019. They were good people and I liked them, but, they didn't get me fixed up. I have been hurt for so many years that I never thought I would be able to get my life back but little by little I am. You've got nothing to lose except getting rid of your hurts. I hope you give them a chance. You can use my name so they know you're serious about getting better. They are over by the Tacoma Mall. Good luck

Dr. Mandela, thank you for the time, compassion, education & simplicity that you put into your videos; helping people like myself understand and retain the concept. Your are fab.
I do have a question about this video in particular. I am very stiff in my neck, as well as tight under the scapula and along the shoulders. What makes it feel better is to lie down, supine position, put my hands cupped behind the occipital region of my neck, and pull my neck forward while also pulling I up in in the air. Like doing a crunch but pulling the neck up and out at an angle so that your body lifts Off the ground starting from your shoulders and then down. It immediately release the tension but I really don’t want to have a stroke. Am I safe doing this?

My friend got his neck cracked at a chiropractor and he felt vertigo and numbness on the right side of his body. He's never been the same since.
