The father of 18-year-old Syrian migrant Mohammed Ahmad says he doesn't know where his son is after he went missing while on a boat that sank off the coast of Greece.

The shipwreck killed at least 78 people, and hundreds are still missing. Witness accounts suggest between 400 and 750 people had piled onto the fishing boat that capsized off the coastal town of Pylos. Relatives of people missing have travelled to Kalamata, the port town that has become the centre of the search and rescue operation, seeking more information.

There are two reasons why people try to enter Europe by this route. First, they are genuine refugees or economic migrants with the skills Europe needs but the current systems for considering their applications are far too slow and bureaucratic. The second reason, is that they are not refugees and they do not have the education/skills needed to gain skilled employment in Europe, so they know their applications will fail. No matter how efficient you make the system for the first group, you will always have the second and these can be counted in the millions.
