How do the Five Factor Personality Traits Affect Career Success?

This video describes the association of personality traits and career success on the Five-Factor Model of Personality Traits. Job satisfaction, performance, and status are used to capture the concept of career success. In personality theory research, general mental ability (sometimes measured by IQ) is often controlled for because IQ is strongly associated with career success.
A popular way to conceptualize personality is with the five-factor model of personality traits, which is also known as “The Big Five” model of personality. In this model, personality comprises five personality traits: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. The acronym OCEAN is helpful for remembering the personality traits. Openness to experience is characterized by insight, creativity, an appreciation of art, intellectual curiosity, and a high awareness of feelings. Conscientiousness is characterized by impulse control, planning tasks carefully, being highly organized and prudence. Extraversion is characterized by getting energy from social interaction, talkativeness, and having a large number of acquaintances. Agreeableness is characterized by being cooperative, increased level of caring, empathy, friendly, seeking to compromise. Neuroticism is characterized by mood dysregulation, anxiety, worry, depression, frustrating, nervousness, being easily upset, and low emotional stability.
Openness to experience is positively associated with career success, but not will all jobs. Conscientiousness is positively associated with career success across almost all careers. Extraversion has a weak positive association with career success, but only with some jobs. Agreeableness does not have a strong association with career success. Neuroticism is negatively associated with career success across many jobs.

Effect of Personality on Job Success/ Performance
-IQ has a higher correlation
-Personality has a lower correlation than IQ
1. Openness- Creative jobs increase. Some jobs decrease. unclear effect on satisfaction
2. Conscientiousness- all jobs increase. high increases satisfaction
3. Extraversion- sales job increase, some jobs no effect, some jobs decrease. high increases satisfaction.
4. Agreeableness- team-based job increase if high, analysis/ scientific job increase if low. low increases satisfaction.
5. Neuroticism- all jobs decrease unless conscientiousness is also high in which case, increase job success. low increases satisfaction

I'm high on openness, middle in conscientiousness, and low on extroversion/neuroticism. I'm a person who does not change jobs often probably because I am low in seeking new experiences in terms of always meeting new people. But I am high on openness with ideas, I think almost everything is the coolest thing in the world lol.

I am glad Dr. Grande mentioned that certain personality traits reflect upon specific jobs. I wonder if job satisfaction is reflective also on how well a person's personality is related to the common personality traits for that job.

This explains a lot. I have a higher than average IQ yet I have had very low earnings, likely because I am very high on neuroticism and very low on conscientious. (This seems in-line with my bipolar disorder diagnosis). I'm also very high on agreeableness but I don't think that's a trait that's valued much. I sure hope I never have to take this test for an employer because I don't think they'd like my results!

The OCEAN acronym helps me to remember these traits much easier. It was interesting to hear that high conscientiousness was associated with highest job performance. It makes sense that different traits fit better with different careers.

Curious correlations here, very interesting to see how the factors and job performance come together.

so I'm the opposite to what would set me up for success. High neuroticism and low conscientiousness. Moreover, I score very high on openness to experience, agreeableness and extraversion.

Interesting to think about and hear about the effect that personality has on job performance and career success. I was surprised to hear that people who score low on agreeableness have higher job satisfaction.

After taking the personality trait test, I can see how personality trait can affect career success. It would be a good test to give to students as they pick a career path, and future job performance

This confirms my preference for the MBTI.

It would make sense that extraversion is associated with more job turnover as I imagine these individuals would no longer gain as much energy from interacting with the same individuals day after day. In this respect, I wonder if they would have more career success in a field such as sales?

Very interesting - thank you.
A small point - you tend to pronounce ‘neuroticism’ as ‘eroticism’ 🤔

Is the Association between low agreeableness and job satisfaction related to someone with low agreeableness being less likely to assert themselves, ask for a raise or fight for position?

Sir, pleased to watch this video. Please share some sources/resesearch papers which I can quote for my research on similar topic.

Also, since I am a student of psychology, studying in India, any kind of guidance in research design would be highly apprecciated. Thank you in advance.
