If you've only casually watched bits and pieces of episodes of "My 600-Lb. Life," you may think that the various patients on the show are rushed straight into surgery to reduce their weight. But that's not really how it works. Before the surgery can happen, the show's resident surgeon, Houston-based Dr. Younan Nowzaradan, puts all his patients on a tough diet.

Just what does Dr. Now's diet entail? It's a regimen that would be tough for just about anybody, and patients have to follow it to the letter to be allowed to stay in the program. This is the truth about Dr. Now's famous "My 600-Lb. Life" diet plan.

To allow yourself to get this heavy there has to be an emotional illness involved and this has to be addressed. All this work could end up lost if all problems are not addressed

Rather than just giving them a list of foods, there should be a nutrition coach to help demonstrate recipes. These people repeatedly show they cannot cook healthy meals for themselves.

Funny. I eat eggs, yolk and all, full fat meat, butter, olive oil, avocadoes, bacon, sausage. NO OATMEAL (oats are sprayed with glyphosate just before harvest). This high fat approach and 85 g of protein a day keep me from feeling hungry. Down two sizes so far. I eats tons of veg and keep my intake down below 1400 calories a day. I use full cream, not milk. My bp is 107/71 my cholesterol is 150 and my lipid profile is perfect. I am 64 years old.

Hippocrates said "let your food be your medicine", and without a healthy diet, not much else is of any use.

A successful weight loss plan starts with the reason(s) why they got that big, in the first place. Without addressing that first, they will go back to their old way of eating. As I often say, "Don't lose weight, to get healthy. Get healthy, to lose weight."

Dr Now is too fast to drastic. If he acknowledged its an addiction then he should ween then from the calories 1st, then carbs and you see much more success. You give someone smaller goals to reach at a time they will be able to follow the success and see it and want it more. People with any addiction need to see progress faster in order to have less chances of giving up.

I eat this way most of the time anyway 🎉 It’s no big deal. I’m 69 and cannot eat lots of sweets and sugar or I wouldn’t be able to be getting around like i do and feel this good!

I am 187lbs male and my wife thinks i am mad for trying this diet. I am also running 3miles most day which isn't on Doctors Now plan. It is working. I am sure running three miles most days would help the people on the show but they may need to work up to that. It only takes 40min to run three miles.

Dr. Nowzaradan's diet is completely wrong and guaranteed to fail if given enough time. The result will be the patient believing that he or she is a failure when it is really the diet that is wrong.
The problem with his diet is that it does not address the principal reason the patient is so obese in the first place, and that reason is that the patient's metabolism and hormones are no longer working properly, particularly the hormone insulin since the patient typically have incredibly high levels of insulin resistance. So to correct the metabolism and insulin resistance more appropriate measures need to be taken. The best approach is long-term fasting where water is allowed but all food is off limits in perhaps a cycle where keto-type meal plan for 3 days then a 5-day water fast then a 3-day keto-type meal plan and so on and all having resistance(weights) exercises instructed by a physical coach for a few months. The result will be that the individual will have gone from severely insulin-resistant to insulin-sensitive and will have a much-improved body composition.
