Overhead Welding 7018 vs Dual Shield Flux Core

Stuff I have used and Like…

This video is about overhead welding with 7018 electrodes compared to Dual Shield Flux core.
Once piece of advice I tell students for Stick welding overhead with 7018 is to set the machine hot enough that the rod will not stick even when you hold a tight arc....then hold a tight arc.
For dual shield flux core, polarity, voltage and wire speed settings, and stick out make the difference.

Gotta say Jody, you've helped me quite a bit while I was in school and still now in the workforce I'll always come back and see if you've got anything I'll be working on ! Basically just wanted to say thanks !

Thank for including the polarity screw up. Some of the best lessons learned are from messing up.

I always enjoyed overhead welding. I was never a great welder but I recall a couple jobs where we had to do a bunch of overhead welding and I did better than the other guys lol.

One job I remember the foreman didn't know how to read the blueprints and told us to weld the stiffeners in some 36 inch wide flange beams only on the top side. I showed him the stiffeners go on both sides but he didn't listen. We lowered the beams down into the cofferdam and installed them and the inspector failed the install for missing stiffeners. I wasn't a certified welder (expired) but was the best overhead welder on the job. It was tough holding a 36 inch long 6 inch wide 1/2 inch think stiffener up with one hand with a little magnet hoping it would not fall on your head, and tacking it overhead then making sure it was on the line and square both ways.

Its been over thirty years since I've done either of those and it sure brings back the memories. Glad you are teaching the right way to do the things we do. 👍👍

Great video! I have never done dual shield welding before, but if I do, I know to check the polarity now. Thank you!

I bought some sealed vac packed 7018 and it just would not weld at all. The 6013 I have had on the shelf for two years in a wet shed was fine. Any ideas ? It's a inverter machine if that helps. Thanks for all the great videos Jodie - you have taught me how to weld from scratch.

Thank you for sharing. I'm a terrible welder, but now I think I know what's wrong. Atleast partly.

Just Jody. Great vid as usual. Can any mig run dual shield? I want to attempt to build my own trailer. Small one. But would have to weld outside. Is this the best process? Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

dual shield flux is also a time saver when welding on powder coated steel or a unprepared piece
