🔨 Why I broke down my fish tank

About 8 months ago I added 2 assassin snails into my snail infested tank in hopes of clearing them out, but unfortunately, they didn’t get the job done completely.

About five months in, the assassin snails self-destructed, leaving behind the biggest ramshorn snails.

At first I thought it was an issue with the water quality, but then I realized the assassin snails may have just had too large of a buffet and over ate since the tank was still teeming with life (detritus worms, copepods, and ramshorn snails).

I decided to just tear down the tank since there were too many pests, what should I add now? :)

Live fish available May 1st (10 am pst) at FishPortals.com! 🐠

The assassins became bored with easy prey, became disillusioned with their existence and decided to die.

I'm a keeper of assassin snails and I noticed that the tank you are keeping them in is pretty small. They are extremely sensitive to changes in the water and temperature, which make them even more vulnerable if they're in a nano tank. Sadly they become lethargic and eat less when stressed out, and can die early as a result. Usually the internet suggests you can fit one in per 5 gallons, but I would suggest having a minimum of 15 gallons to offset any large changes done by doing a water change. Any less you are going to want to be very careful when adding in new water!

Yall don't realize that the assassin snail went on a warrior's journey. But she wanted more death and carnage in her tank.

The assassin snail finally found peace and tranquility after a long life of killing and death. Passing away, into the next world making the fish tank a better place than they found it.

Hey! Just letting you know that wasn't a parasite, it was a detritus worm! They help break down organic matter in your aquarium, fish love to eat them. Copepods too! All these little creatures are completely normal to see in a healthy, seasoned aquarium. I'd even consider them beneficial.

Those little white worms are called detritus worms and they are common but harmless segmented worms. Many aquarists would rather not have any worms in their tanks, but detritus worms are actually a great member of your tank’s clean-up crew. These tiny annelid worms work hard to break down waste which helps keep the tank clean and the water quality high.

I now identify as a assassin snail. I’m violent and I love snails.

That wasn't a parasite, it was a detritus worm. Both they and copepods are beneficial as they consume waste, and they both make great food for fish fry.

Can confirm. Some snails are even more prolific than mice and rabbits. I remember we had such a bad infestation of them in the guppy tank I had as a kid. It seemed like every corner of the tank and all the decor was gummed up with snail eggs some weeks. I can't tell you how many we must've removed by hand.. Those poor guppies. Lol.

I love how sweet and unassuming your voice is while you're so giddy about these cold assassinations being played out.😂

This actually happened to my axolotl tank with bladder snails! It was very interesting but the axolotls ate them all and the process was over haha. It was very interesting to watch and see them hunting for once versus being hand fed worms all the time. Snails are actually their favorite snack so it worked out great!
