Let's put this in the right perspective. Science was flourishing in the Dutch Republic, in England not so much yet just like England wasn't flourishing like the Dutch Republic until they got invaded by it about a decade later. The Royal Society was not his scientific authority, they just has his work translated and spread it. The reason the Dutch Republic had no (republican) equivalent of the Royal society was lack of need to institutionalize the spread of knowledge, the coutnry was much better connected and mobile, both geographically and in terms of class.
Van Leeuwenhoek was the son of a basketmaker, who had a good career and made quite a bit of money in cloth, Dutch cloths was the best at that time there is where the lenses come in. He was bascially an amateur, a hobbyist, but curiosity was part of the culture.
