I believe that the gifts of the Holy Spirit were never withdrawn from the church. Believers today can get the exact same experience that the 120 got in Acts 2. However, any experience we think may be from the Holy Spirit must be measured against scripture. If there is no evidence for it in scripture or it outright contradicts it, then we know that the experience is not of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is still here to be our Helper as the Lord said in John 14:16. God can give the gift of his Spirit to us if we ask for it and he chooses to provide it, just like Christ said in Luke 11:13, and it is received by faith like Paul said in Galatians 3:2, 5. Again I agree with John MacArthur here, any experience must be measured against Scripture and claiming the Spirit did things he did not, dishonours him.

It is sad that there is no central ground. You either have the hyper-charismatics who abuse the doctrine or those who boast but there is no unction among them. Then comes the cessationists who refuse any possibility the Holy Spirit can still communicate among the brethren.
These differences are one reason why the faith isn't united.

He’s speaking for the Holy Spirit while criticizing “charismatic” Christian’s for attributing things to the Holy Spirit. Let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water. I’ve seen some nutty stuff, but I’ve also seen a lot of pure love for people coming from Charismatic Christian’s and it’s not fair to lump them all together for the purpose of lifting up and exalting your own brand of Christianity as if you’re Gods gatekeeper protecting heaven from all of us sinners. Don’t forget the Pharisees who did that please.
