By the end of the 18th century not only was France amid social and political upheaval, but their beauty practices would also begin to make drastic shifts. It was off with their heads with all the beauty symbols of a hierarchize society and cultural elite. The century of rouge would end in blood.

Welcome back to Nutty history. Today we are diving into the history of beauty practices, beauty hacks, and the beauty mishaps during the French Revolution.

Face Powder of Iron - Toxic.
Rouge (red) of Mercury Sulfide - Toxic.

Instagram and unrealistic beauty standards - Toxic. Still toxic, but less direct.

I had joined because I liked the voice of the guy I heard in the 4 or 5 videos I watched...I was pleasantly surprised to hear another voice, and another one I like! Great Channel and another great video that it seems you all put some care into making...I'm a fan of the channel. 👍

You talk about the "sans-culottes" while showing examples of men wearing ... culottes. The sans-culottes were the petty proprietors and artisans of Paris who, to distinguish themselves from the aristocracy, wore coarse, full-length loose pants instead of knee-breeches, hence the name. Big mistake.

Lead in the face powder, mercury in the rouge, lead compounds to sweeten wine, mercury as a medicine. I always wonder how the long term mental effects of these substances contributed to the French revolution- like the theory that lead pipes carrying Rome's water supply might have affected ancient Rome and contributed to the bloodthirstiness.

You would think that a narrator for a video about French beauty would, at least, learn how to pronounce French words.

That simple white dress Marie Antoinette was pictured in, was her chemise, or slip. It was quite scandalous for the queen to pose for her portrait in her underwear. But the style caught on, and was later called a "chemise de la reign" (pardon my spelling).

“Et” is pronounced “A”. “Echelon” is “ESH-alon”. We are losing the ability to speak correctly.

Okay "Marie" isn't pronounced "Mary." Her pronunciation is terrible.

I heared the standard of beauty at the time of the French Revolution was a cackling old crone with no teeth, and any aristocrat who wished to travel safely would have to wear Baldric's pants.

Can you guys please please please just Google how to pronounce words youre not certain about beforehand? The way you both have pronounced French words, and I'm sure many other words, is straight up painful to the native ear

Nice presentation, but it would be great to have the narrator pronounce any foreign words (to English) properly. This stands for all presentations. Ty

Better to be poor now than rich in the French revolution. At least we have clean teeth and no lice

These trends are laughable. They all looked like 🤡s & I would've made fun of their sky scraper wigs. Who would want to wear makeup that makes you drool.

I find "amusing" when Americans make fun of the poor hygiene habits in Europe during the Middle Ages or later. Have a look at the hygienic conditions in New York city during the 18th and 19th Century. That was horrendous!

It just shows how much progress shas been made since then. No wonder our much-improved level of hygiene has contributed to a longer life expectancy.
