With top-secret make-up compartments, arsenic baths, and burned off freckles, being beautiful in the Victorian era was anything but easy and breezy. Today on Nutty History we’re examining beauty standards in Victorian England. The feminine ideal of the famously modest period was to look like a wilting, delicate flower. To pull off this dead rose look, Victorian women used a variety of methods which ranged from peculiar to poisonous. Don’t try these at home, folks. But before we sharpen our eye pencils, please subscribe to our channel and let us know what odd occurrences you’d like to hear about next.

I always wondered what Victoria’s Secret was...

Just letting y'all know, corsets themselves were not dangerous. They're literally just bras with front and back support. VERY few women actually tightlaced.

Victorian women were trying to reach unattainable beauty standards same as us. Paintings and sketchings showed women with flawless milky skin and cinched waists. Later even the photos were photoshopped. Tight lacing was actually pretty rare and not really a thing until metal eyelets were invented... Most of the small waists we see in photos, especially during that of the Edwardian period...were drawn/photoshopped to look impossibly small. We pretend as if it's something new today but they had their own version of FaceTune.

I have an antique book that was published in the 1880's called "Womanhood, Marriage, and Motherhood". One passage gives advice to young men on what to look for in a potential mate: the ideal young woman should have a high forehead (that was considered a sign of intelligence), a long, graceful swan-like neck, ample hips, and a plump bosom!

Corsets we're not right laced! Please check out the many YouTubers that are experts on this subject. Very few women did this. Corsets we're important because they supported the weight of their skirts.

Nothing worse for a woman's complexion than enjoying a good book.

A lot of this is inaccurate, taken out of context, or hypocritical. I recommend that you do some actual research before making a video. This video spreads a lot of misinformation.

Corsets were not uncomfortable to wear they were custom fit

I'm unable to take this channel seriously seeing the fact they keep using images of Queen Elizabeth Tudor and she lives in the 1500's not to Victorian era!

My grandmother, who was born in 1900, told me about a few of these very strange beauty tips.

Interesting vid but there are plenty of actual Victorian time pictures, rather than using pics from Elizabethan to Edwardian eras.

Most of us wouldn't be sitting pretty on this Era, as most of the people were poor and had to work for a living.

The factual side of this video is very interesting and very informative. But a lot of the slides shown were not Victorian at all. Renaissance & Baroque Italian, Elizabethan, and Rococo slides in a Victorian beauty video kind of ruined it for me. Sorry.

As the Kardashions have demonstrated there is no end to what women will do to achieve the current standard of beauty. 😬

Can anyone explain why there were so many pictures of Queen Elizabeth I in a video about the Victorian Era?

EmoInu

Couldn’t watch half of this because y’all kept showing pictures of Queen Elizabeth.

I was talking to a eighty four year old woman a couple of years ago, I asked her how her face looked so young, she said she had never used soap or makeup on her face.

Why was there pics of queen Elizabeth I

Why photos from other periods. You need to do more research. A rat is not a wig, it is used under the hair to add volume.
