When he said “I had lost all hope” after he lost young trunks & bulma I started too think that, so that’s kind of why future gohan would sometimes call future trunks the last hope, man I always wonder what Future Gohan saw in Future Trunks that the others couldn’t and including not even his own mother bulma.

The idea of after all that time, falling to "the dark side", and having the man stand in his way being his father is such a great and interesting story idea. Would goku understand? Would he be disappointed? Disgusted in what his son had become? Would their be a debate of ideals, with goku trying to grab his son back out of the abyss? Just so many ways it could go, and dynamics they could play with.

I remember in the future of trunks feature, when gohan was protecting trunks, he had an inner monolog about how he wished his father was still here, as he'd know what to do. The idea of facing his father all these years later when he has completely fallen to the despair is just such a great plot for an arc. Imagine goku giving a heart to heart, apologizing for not being there for gohan when he needed him the most. And this could initiate character development where goku understands how important it is for him to be present for his family moving forward.

Seeing gohan like this it's really hit's different, once a cheerful kid like his dad turn out to be this. It's a same vibe where the eldest son in the family has to step-up regarding the situation or age his in after his father's death. They want to rely on someone or something they have in their life but things doesn't seem to be going as they wanted.
