Inmates can literally turn anything into weapons if they got the brains

An inmate in my country made a smart escape. He take a soap and shaped it to a small gun using a rock and he painted using Black Shoe Kiwi (you know the thing they put on shoes to make it more shinny) and he went to the main gate. He told the guard he was just looking around until he grabbed the guard from back and pointed the soap shaped gun at the guard's stomach. The guard saw it and think it was a real gun. He force the guard to open the gate and got away easily .

I truly can't believe they didn't talk about Lock-Socks. One of the most deadly and common prison weapons.

I worked in several prisons in the US in the 90's and by far the most used and effective weapon I seen used was a "lock in a sock" followed closedly by the handle of a mop bucket (the part used to force the excess water from the wet mop).

Shivs usually come in 2 varieties: defense or wounding which are usually slashing types or killing which are stabbing types. Though they can be used interchangeably because beggars cant be choosers. Use what you can get your hands on for whatever you need it for

In the Philippines, the inmates of New Bilibid prison has handmade knives to high caliber weapons. Each prison inspection/raid always yield pistols to automatic weapons. Honestly i'm amazed that prison riots aren't that common with this kind of arsenals. Though i would like to point out that most of the drug lord or high profile criminals are kept here. So there was a lot of bribery and corruption. Heck some of the inmates cell had air-conditioning, dance pole for when they brought in hookers, bar, and other amenities you wouldn't usually find in a third world prison.

Zip guns aren't just a prison weapon. My grandfather used zip guns in the 50s he used a slam shotgun version were you can either slam it against a wall or push it really hard with your hands so it goes off. And they also used a pen gun variant of the zip gun so it could be easily hidden in his pockets. My dad told me about this after my grandfather had passed away because i was just barely getting into lowriders and oldies and stuff like that and he was into that type of stuff in highschool aswell

I remember a story my grandfather told me, when a riot broke out, some inmates had thrown some alcohol, and then a prisoner had a rubber band crossbow, with a alcohol soaked cloth tip, with a bamboo stick.
They lit up the tip, and fired the improvised crossbow.
My grandfather managed to get out unscaved, but his comrade had gotten doused, and was lit ablaze.

I'm honestly surprised ex-cons aren't held in higher regard, especially in the U.S. They can make so much out of so little, not just weapons. I've seen improvised medical equipment, tattoo guns, cooking ingredients and cookware, electronics, and so much more.
