Climate activists who glued hands to Goya paintings say it was “worthwhile”

Climate activists who glued their hands to two paintings by the Spanish painter Francisco de Goya said their actions were “worthwhile” Monday after being released from custody.

Four protesters remain under investigation for alleged crimes against the “artistic-historical patrimony.” Those who cause damage to property of historic or artistic value in Spain can be sentenced to at least six months in jail or a fine.

Two of the activists, Alba del Rio, 21, and Samuel Gomez, 18, told Reuters they “had no intention” of damaging the artwork.

“We are a bit overwhelmed for everything we have gone through, but we are happy that it appeared in the media so our action was worthwhile,” said Samuel Gomez.

Groups of climate activists have mounted a series of similar attacks on famous works of in the build-up to the COP27 climate change conference in Egypt.
