TJ'S GEAR

In this video I've got some tips for turning down steep runs on your snowboard. We're snowboarding in St Anton Austria and riding one of the steepest runs I've ever been down. The first tips for steep runs is to make quick turns on your snowboard. By making quick turns you'll avoid picking up too much speed and getting out of control. The second tip is to avoid staying too long on your heels. Turn your chest to the top and keep your back hand over your tail to turn onto your toes. Finally keep your weight centered over your snowboard to avoid sliding out with your weight too far out beyond your edge. If you have any questions for turning down steep run snowboarding, please leave them below. Thanks for watching!

This is the technique you use when you shouldnt be on runs this steep. I finally started enjoying these types of runs last year and I found its all about leaning forward getting the weight over your front foot so that the back can turn. when your not confident you naturally lean back in a stop position and the board wont turn. When you cant get on to your toes look down at your legs and I bet your back leg will be bent and your lead leg will be straight.

I got cliffed out in Park City side country with no mountain experience and no idea of the dangers. It took me ages too slide down a rocky cliff face on my board with no one around and my heart was in my mouth, I made it down remembering one tip don't take your board off in steep areas. It could have been worse and Iv'e learnt a bit from then and when riding a new mountain I ask locals for info on snowpack, conditions and the best runs there usually willing to give tips!!!

classic video, love these how to's. keeps it fresh in memory on what to do. I tend to put my weight up the mountain too much and just lean slightly, clearly a confidence/experience thing

It seems like a big part of making the turn is making a small hop to bring the back foot around. It’s not really a jump but it takes enough weight off so you can turn sharp without catching an edge. I haven’t heard that mentioned in videos though.

Kevin and TJ put out a lot of fantastic content on this channel but I think there is a unified belief that this video isn’t one of their best. I describe this as survival snowboarding really. Teaching folks to ride steeps like these properly is fairly intermediate-advanced stuff and is quite techy to do it properly. As others have said, some main points IMO would definitely be get lower and be more dynamic on the board with quick movements between the nose, centre and tail of the board throughout each turn.

Weight on the nose of the board with pedalling to initiate the turn.

Straight back to centred weight on your new early edge.

Progressive movement to the tail to finish the turn to create grip and reduce skidding.

Some folks mentioned CASI; I thought Kevin has a CASI qualification, though I don’t know what level.

Please don't encourage people to go off piste without any gear. Enough people are getting themselves killed without videos like this.

You know, I am probably never going to attempt a run like that... And I'm totally okay with it! I would personally way rather go fast and have fun on something slightly less crazy; then just get down something like that survival style praying to God I don't kill myself the whole way down....

Hey one quick question, is it easier to go down steep stuff like this in snowboard or skis? Thanks!!!

How does that compare to the Chutes at Steamboat? I feel like I can ride a little more carving like there, but anything steeper and I would be forced to use the hopping method in the video. I think too if a run is too narrow, this may get you into trouble (lol would maybe get me into trouble).
