I still haven’t seen Babylon, BUT my mom (who’s worked at a church for 20 years) took one of her buddies from church to see it 😳😳😳😳.

Her friend walked out and the texts from my mother describing the film were hilarious…she was not a fan and didn’t recommend I see the film.

So apparently the only people who saw this film were film twitter (who loved it) and church ladies in their 60s (who hated it)

I love your point about how Hollywood is obsessed with itself because I think there has been a trend of fewer “movie stars” that attract audiences. Everyone I talk to asks what a movie is about rather than who is in it, and there isn’t much relatability when it’s about 1920’s Hollywood… “activities” 😅

I totally agree with the fact that the movie's audience is just gonna be cinephiles. It's a mix of Boogie Nights and The Wolf of Wall Street and I think it's just as good as those two films. Even though it has a ton of flaws I had a really good time with it and I think it's worth seeing unless you have no interest whatsoever. Personally I was only interested in it because of Chazelle and I love Whiplash and La La Land. The trailers do not do this movie justice and the marketing was also not very good.

Babylon is in my top 15 movies of all time. I loved it so much

I saw it yesterday and it's probably my favorite movie of the year. The music, the energy, and the sense of time and place were off the charts. It was an awesome mix of The Aviator and Wolf of Wall Street. Was it perfect? Of course not. But it's a movie that's rarely made nowadays.

Public perception of Hollywood has changed radically in the last fifteen years. Audiences in general are no longer under the big screen spell that once held sway in earlier decades.

It's definitely next on my list. I might go see it tonight

Edit: I've had a weird day. A lot of shit going on, private stuff but it has been weighing heavily on my brain. So, when I saw Babylon tonight I was alone in a theater, I got a little high and it was an actual spiritual experience. As someone who has always been fascinated by Hollywood and dreams of one day being apart of it... Babylon was a beauty to behold. Certainly not flawless, but probably the best theater movie I saw this year, and I think I went to the movies between 30 and 40 times so thats saying something

Was very scared of the runtime of this movie. Turned out to be my favorite movie of the year. The movie is very entertaining and will draw you in. Very awesome movie. Especially if you loved time based movies. I’m sad it’s failing so bad in the box office.

I liked the message in once upon a Time in Hollywood.

Rick Dalton has his career going down and he doesn’t want to do Italian westerns… But he’s coming to the terms that if he doesn’t do anything now that’s going to keep him reverent in Hollywood. The audience will forget about him! It’s either do the films you hate or don’t do anything at all and let people move on from your legacy…..

I feel like a lot of actors are understanding if they don’t stay attached to a strong IP like MARVEL OR DC. They are not going to get the income that they want in Hollywood. And maybe some actors don’t want to be in a Marvel movie. But they have to have work to Stay reverent, it’s about survival. Because sadly normal movies like BABYLON are failing…… 😭😭😭

They didn’t marketed it as from the director of La La Land, came out a week after Avatar 2, the long runtime can be a turn off for a lot of ppl, the demographic for this type of film is small or came out a few years too late (Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is very similar to Babylon but it made a lot of money). Maybe it would’ve performed better if it didn’t come out around Christmas.

Personally for me, Babylon is a love letter to cinema. I thought the first half was a masterpiece but the second half felt sluggish and didn’t need to be that long. Overall it’s a 4/5 for me

The run time I think, I wanted to go see it for tobey maguire, but I can’t justify seeing a 3+ hour movie just to see tobey as a side character lol

This was never the kind of film that was going to make that money in today’s cinema landscape. Having said that, this is in my top 5 films of the year, and I’m so happy that it somehow got made. I had an absolute blast, and I felt so excited walking out of the theater

I saw it by myself last night, and I was the only one in the theater 😬 that’s never happened to me before

I didn't see it because December is a hectic time of year for me. I'm working 50-60 hours at work on top of it being Christmas season. Add to it that Babylon is a three hour movie, add in the 20-30 minutes of trailers before the movie and you're at the theater almost 4 hours. It was out of my local theater before the new year. Had this either came out in November or January, I would've seen it in theaters.

Paramount got their massively payday with Top Gun Maverick so they could afford a misfire!

I was sold on this movie from the absolute bonkerness the trailer displayed. It gave me wolf of Wall Street meets the great gatsby (minus the Leo) vibes. What I got out of it was deeper than that. It was exploring the transition from silent movies to talkies, how so so many actors could not make that transition, and what it does to people. It’s not for everyone. It gets uncomfortable. It either appeals to you or it doesn’t. I loved it

Try and have an open mind, Sean. As a fan of Chazelle’s other works, I loved Babylon. Runtime is ridiculous as there could’ve been certain scenes cut but it’s a work of art with a capital A. Really well acted, the score is brilliant and the ending is great. Had fun with it, hope you do too

I just finished watching it for the first time and I was in the group of I had no freaking clue what the movie was about when it was being advertised. I was so confused it was just colorful noise at the time. But I started it on Prime and honestly I loved the insane boldness of this movie. It's really well done I will say it does hit the audience in the face in the first 20 minutes of the movie before the title scene comes on. But I really digged it.
