Fun fact: the Tsar Bomba that was tested was only half of its potential yield. The actual design includes a uranium 238 tamper (optional layer of dense material surrounding the fissile material…thanks Wikipedia for the better explanation than I had). Had it included the tamper the yield would have been closer to 100 megatons, but they were worried about too much nuclear fallout.

The shockwave travelled across the globe 3 times. American scientists were stunned that the Russians were even able to get it into the air it was so heavy and to think they wanted to make it 100 megatons originally. It couldn’t be used as a weapon though because of its immense size and weight. It did create a massive crater though and obliterated well everything. It had to have a parachute attached to it to slow its decent so the crew could escape and even then they nearly roasted.

What’s scary is that the Russians now have a torpedo called Poseidon. Apparently its yield is 100 megatons and they can fit 6 of them on a sub.

Apparently Poseidon is a torpedo not just armed with a nuclear warhead but is also driven by nuclear power. And it seems they have figured out how to make airborne missiles driven by nuclear power as well. We tried to do that a while back but couldn’t figure out how to keep the nuclear material from leaking out. The Russians claimed to have perfected the method. If this is true it means their missiles and torpedos can move at speeds which we probably couldn’t even detect and they can stay in motion for a long time.

IIRC, it wasn't meant to be a deterrent, it was part of the massive pp measuring contest that went on between the US and USSR. The bomb ended up being too impractical to use against an enemy, as it was too big to put in a missile, and it had to be dropped from a special bomber from a really high altitude just to give it enough time to escape the blast.

It's honestly comforting knowing this bomb has actually been detonated and isn't just sitting somewhere without us knowing exactly what it can do. Or maybe that we just know our limits and are not willing to go past this point.
