Discussing the meaning of Atheist and Agnostic. If you don't believe in god, you're an atheist... even if you're not certain god doesn't exist. I wanted to make this video to generate discussion on the topic, so please leave a comment and share this video :)

Thanks for watching this video on the difference between agnostic and atheist. Do you identify as just agnostic? Are you afraid that labeling yourself as an atheist will bring negative attention towards you? What about saying agnostic atheist? I've called myself agnostic atheist for a while now and it personally makes the most sense to me. Agnosticism is not a religion (and neither is Atheism), despite the youtube tag suggestions haha. ATHEIST VS AGNOSTIC! GO!

Allow me to explain:

Atheist: What you call yourself in private.

Agnostic: What you have to call yourself in public.

Pretty much.

i disagree with you a lot on this I identify as agnostic. because i can not prove there is a god and i cant prove there isn't a god. period. i don't not believe in god and i don't believe in god. i have lack of evidence and faith for both sides. i am neutral so i cant say i'm atheist at all because that wouldn't be true and i cant say i believe in god because that's not true either

I've been describing myself as an atheist since age ten. No doubts. No apologies.

Do you believe in god?
Agnostic: I'm not sure
Atheism: No

Atheism - I believe there is no god
Agnosticism - I don't have any idea

At this point in time, we have no evidence of the existence of GOD, but we're open to possibilities. But for now, lack of evidence points to the possibility that there's no GOD. I don't know why some extremist Atheists confuse this simple position of Agnostics.

I personally believe that unless you have a definition that doesn't contradicts itself internally or with the reality we are living in, the thing you defined cannot exist in the way you defined it. So I am a stronger atheist on the main religions, because they are all proven bullshit, but agnostic towards the general idea of a god. If the gods of the bible or koran or whatever are real, then they are liars, so they don't deserve my worship anyway.

I mean I believe that there's some kind of god, but I don't really believe in any religion. I'm still not sure what to label myself. I don't support the things religion says. But I still believe in some kind of higher power

So I am Agnostic and i agree with some of this, but also a part of my own understanding of the word is that, I'm not sure but it is indeed possible that there is a god/higher being. We just don't know if that is a thing, so I don't want to say that I do/don't believe. Also, who's to say aliens didn't create us?

Im paraphrasing here but richard dawkins said something along the lines of "im agnostic about god in the same way im agnostic about the tooth fairy" so am i technically agnostic, yeah i guess, but by all practical means, im an atheist.

1. Gnostic Atheist - Knows and believes there is no god.
2. Agnostic Atheist - Lacks belief, but does not know there is no god.
3. Gnostic Theist - Knows and believes there is a god.
4. Agnostic Theist - Believes, but does not know there is a god.

I admit, I copy and pasted this from The Atheist Experience's page.

Dear lady, I am an agnostic and the world is not black or white, we don't have to either to be atheist or to be theist so that you can be considered to hold a believe!
There is no scientific prove to support the believe of god existance or not!
I don't know if god exist! I have to repeat it I don't know! Is that a problem if assuming we don't know?

Agnosticism simply means 'without knowledge' while atheism simply means 'without theism'. So you can be an agnostic atheist and that's where you don't believe in a deity but don't claim to know that one doesn't exist, that's why it's an absence (lack of) belief and is also known as 'weak atheism'. A gnostic atheist is someone who doesn't believe in a deity and claims to know that no deity exists, which is known as 'strong atheism'. While similarly an agnostic theist believes in one deity but doesn't claim to know for certain there is one and a gnostic theist believes in one deity and claims to know that one exists. Personally for me I think the title 'Skeptical Atheist' suits me better.

I wish I would have watched this before a few weeks to a month ago when my mom confronted me with her own personal belief of what I am. She basically started off like this "I figured out what you are. You're not an atheist, you're agnostic!" in an excited tone because somehow I guess this was supposed to be enlightening news that was better than the other way around. I tried to explain to her no, this is what I think and feel, not that and she refused to accept that instead asking ME if I knew the difference between the two. To top it off my dad then jumps in as he so often does the moment he comes in the room without knowing the conversation from the start and too asks me what the difference is. I explain one is just admitting to not know and the other is to take everything into consideration and just disregard and not believe whatsoever that God exists or ever existed. He kept trying to use that against me and every 'point' I made either "didn't make sense" (every other conversation we have despite the topic he says I make no sense and I should stop talking) or that it only proves I'm agnostic as I said "No one really knows for sure so I'm not going to say I do" agnostic atheist is more fitting but it's not that argument that made me upset it was that they tried to relabel me with their own definition and if it doesn't match up with theirs, it MUST be wrong. I think the best part was when they both agreed on me being close minded. Home life in a nutshell C:

Some people think that agnosticism means you can't call BS on things like the bible and that you are open to the fact that it could be true. In general I consider myself an agnostic but I can look at the bible and other holy books and say they are clearly full of it. Being agnostic means you follow reason as far as you can and don't pretend any conclusions beyond what is demonstrable can be considered true.

I don't lazy label. I explain my beliefs to avoid the confusion. its easier

I am Agnostic, NOT atheist. I neither believe there is a god, nor that there isn't a god because my knowledge doesn't give me a position either way. That would be the truest definition of agnostic. At one point, I was closer to theist and at another point closer to atheist but there can and does exist a middle ground which is claimed not to exist

Do you belive in God or in some other deity or in something like that? I can't answer yes or no, is like asking me if I belive in the fact that in the world exists someone else with my same name, maybe, i don't know and so I can't answer this question with a yes or a no

Do you belive that God or some other deity or something like that might exists? Yes

Do you belive that God or some other deity or something like that might not exists? Yes

What am I?

The foundation of this misunderstanding is cemented in people's inability to recognise that words coined in Greek and Latin have "original" meanings that very rapidly go on to shift and grow.  English is a living language with words changing state constantly (take awful and its original meaning of evoking awe, or terrible, gay or "quantum-shift").  Whilst the word entered English as "no knowledge", philosopher David Hume noted that in a Scientific Age, meaningful statements about the universe are always qualified with some degree of doubt.  The MODERN meaning od agnostic reflects this; that an honest position is to acknowledge that, however unlikely a theistic deity or deities are, the fact that they are IMPOSSIBLE is not as yet provable.  As has been argued before, it is very fair to say it is unlikely that unicorns exist, as there is really no evidence at present to say that they do.  However, id one shows up in the fossil record, we are in trouble!  This actually happens in science frequently.  Astrophysicists are presently VERY CAUTIOUS in their statements about concepts such as "can we still say 'universe'", or is it more accurate to talk about "the multiverse".  We were very confident for the last one hundred years that the Big Bang model was accurate; now it is again with valid cause called into question.  Questions of certainty require us to be humble.  To protect the ability to shift into a realm of better data, it is frequently sensible and honest to refer to levels of the unknown, rather than the known.  :)
