James hardie does not recommend you caulk butt joints at all, I’ve been a painter for years and we do not caulk those we only caulk end joints and corner guards. There is a few reasons you don’t. One is because the expansion of hardy plank and another is when you caulk and paint over it the paint fades over time and the paint on the caulking won’t fade you will be left with lines that are darker than the siding and cracking/separation on the butt joints.
