What If China Was Colonized? | Alternate History

China and Japan are typically remembered as two of the few countries to have not faced colonization by the European powers, however, unlike Japan who was able to modernize, and even compete with Colonial Powers like Russia and Britain, Qing China struggled to overcome its lagging development, and was forced to endure a century of humiliation and political domination at the hands of both the West and Japan. But things could have been a lot worse for China, and there were definitely ideas floating around at the time for how the Chinese Empire could be carved up. Major destabilizing conflicts like the Taiping Rebellion and the Boxer Rebellion offer us excellent opportunities to ask what if China was colonized?

It'd be interesting to see how a great war would be fought in this front

Imagine being only 9 percent of the world population but directly colonizing 80 percent of the world

I feel like the United kingdom would get the Shanghai area and Hong Kong area to expand and france would go deeper in the north from Vietnam

What if the US gradually returned to isolationism after the Cold War?

What if the Ottomans Romanized?

What if Catherine the Great’s Greek Plan happened?

What if France opposed Italian unification alongside Austria?

Whats annoying about these alternate history videos. Something that most of the content creators do is that ALWAYS spend 3/4 of the video explaining the actual history. Like yeah I know the actual history. Which is why I wanted to see alternate history...

I disagree that China would be a German ally. If China still remained independent they would have been dominated by the British. In our timeline the British got a lease over Weiheiwei which basically meant it was British territory in all but name. I'd see the British getting more of these leases in this scenario, especially around the Yangtse and Yellow rivers.

Great video Mr Z! But would Britain have Tibet, especially given the Himalayas I think that it would be more trouble than it’s worth

I think Japan would most likely take the coast of china like they did in World war 2

It's hard to imagine that a China with western technology and military training would remain under colonial rule for very long. They likely would become very advanced and industrial like imperial Japan except with 10x the population. They would then easily be able to restore Qing borders and probably go much further.

You should do a scenario of what if Japan never Isolated itself in the 1600s. And started colonies.

What if China became fascist ?
What if Japan became communist ?
What if Mary Tudor gave birth to A son or daughter ?
What if Richard III Won the war of the roses ?
What if Wilhelm I died earlier, like in 1862 ?
What if Edward V lived long enough to become king ?

We need a part 2 about how the first world War would play out in this timeline.

That's a good point. The Nationalist sentiment in China in the early 1900s was more a result of Qing failure than actually Han nationalism. Had the Qing modernized successfully, perhaps their empire would still exist today.

so a more bloody ww1 then...

it would be interesting to see the cultural results of both the pre-ww1 and the 2 post ww1 scenarios here.

In fact, the Korean Empire also tries colonized Manchuria territory in China and they almost succeeded.
In late 19th century and early 20th century, the Korean Empire wants to reclaim their ancient territory in Manchuria and first they occupied Jiandao(간도) area.
During that time, many Korean immigrants were settled in Manchuria especially Jiandao and they had conflicts with Qing government.
And Korean Empire used this to territorial expansion and luckily Qing Empire was weak since the Boxer rebellion and the imperial army of Korea easily take over the Jiandao.
But unfortunately, in 1909, the Japanese and Qing had a Gando convention secretly and Korea lost Jiandao forever.

This low-key reminds me of how China, and Asia as a whole, looks in Kaiserreich

Do a video on what if Sun Yat Sen was able to remain as China’s president upon being elected, and swiftly defeated the Qing Dynasty and Yuan Shikai in the process.
