Which other aspects of colonial history would you want to see a video on?

It is interesting that the last concession abandoned was the Italian one (1947). Among other things, the old buildings remain (barracks and palaces in the fascist style and villas in the Liberty style as seen in Viareggio on the Tuscan coast). Chinese government, very intelligently, has restored the neighborhood (it didn't even remove the fasces and the portraits of Mussolini) and transformed it into a touristic Little Italy

Can suggest you to read about Ningbo as well. It wasn't a colony (even though Brits tried), but history of the city is pretty interesting. Especially, international relations in this port.

I think that was also the only colony of Austria-Hungary. They also discovered Franz Josef Land (which was also named after Emperor Franz Josef) but they never occupied it, today it belongs to Russia.

The europeans basically had an addiction of "haha, your land mine now" for over two centuries so the title does not surprise me.
First things i know about the european influence on China before i watch this video is that the British Empire colonized Hong Kong and the Portuguese Empire colonized Macao, plus Germany colonized a bit and i think no other european power colonized stuff from China but they just had spheres of influence, and there was the boxer rebellion by people from China rising up to root out the europeans, but that is all i know.

The Boxer Rebellion was one of the most unequal conflicts in history, it was UK, Spain, Italy, Japan, Russia, Germany and USA against the Qing Dynasty.

The Opium War happened because European powers had a trade deficit with China and they had nothing China wanted, or needed, so The British East India Company began illegally importing Opium. China banned all imports, Europe went to war and China lost because despite being powerful they hadn’t been at war with their neighbors, or anyone for a very long time. Europe made China sign a lot of unequal treaties forcing the country opened and still imported Opium….Two things about this you see today #1 Hong Kong was a British territory on a 100year lease and & #2 China is only just now regaining the power it once had in the 19th century. It invests in it’s military today to prevent this occurring ever again. (Very short version if you have questions please let me know).

As a Chinese,I don't think China is very likely to take revenge in this century, but I do think that every comment in the comment section is raising the odds

Opium wars in quick summary: Brits love tea, like a lot. So much that they were sending all their silver to China for it(the only payment they accepted) To correct the huge trade deficit that was bankrupting them, rather than quit drinking so much tea they started selling opium in China. Once everyone was hooked the Chinese government saw how destructive opium was and outlawed it. Like any drug dealer the Brits didn’t like anyone muscling in on their turf so Opium War. China lost, tried again to outlaw opium, bam Second Opium War.

Opium War Summary:

The British facilitated opium smuggling and usage in China for economic gain, China retaliated against British merchants, the British curb-stomped the Chinese using the Royal Navy. China allowed concessions to Britain, including ceding Hong Kong.

There’s much much more to it, but that’s the gist of it lol

Opium War Summary:

the british got the chinese addicted to opium and made huge profits out of the opium export. the qing government made the drug illegal and the british started a war over it which they won because the soldiers couldn't really put up much of a fight due to almost all of them being high for most of the day..

00:14 That map is a bit wrong because Japan also had European influence in the 16th century, when Nagasaki was ruled by the Portuguese. A century later, Japan would enter in a isolation regime and the Portuguese were expulsed from there.

Very good and concise piece. Only one reminder; the pronunciation of the world “Shanghai” 上海 in Chinese, is Shang Hai. Not Shang Gai.

Thank you for making this video. Hongkongers somehow want to be colonised by UK all these years.

Please say “Shang-Hai” instead of “shan-gai”. That sounds too funny. 😅

The Portuguese lead and the others followed. The Portuguese arrived in 1500s and left in 1999. The 1st Europeans to settle a trading post in China (Macau) and the last ones to leave almost 500 years later. Also while the agreement between China and the Portuguese was a peaceful one, many others were imposed by wars.

Opium War TL;DR:

A really aggressive drug dealer moves into your garage after beating the shit out of you and forcing you to start getting high on his supply after your cousin who lives with you started getting high.

Your description of the invasion, occupation of Beijing and Tianjing during the suppression of the Boxer uprising is somewhat low key.
This subject is taught in Chinese Schoolsin great detail. The troops made the Qu
Ing "Empress" and her son, later the last Qing Emperor, flee Beijing. The troops set fire to the Summer Palace and it was burnt to the ground.
This is causing a lot of ill-feeling in the Chinese polulation, while in the West, it is barely mentioned in the schools at all.

(Unlike India) China had nothing that Europe wanted except trade so they never militarily annexed Macau, Hongkong or even entire country but forced Qing Empire to lease or cede some islands or ports.
