It’s okay to criticize someone’s culture and to not respect institutionalized abuse. I guarantee that everyone here has an opinion on slavery, apartheid, women’s suffrage etc whether or not they’re from countries that had those issues. This is the same thing.

Objectification of women and treating them like property is in every culture it’s just in different forms and in some cases more severe than others. But it makes me so sad that women all over the world have to do things to themselves they don’t want to do just so men are pleased… when will it end💔

I feel for her. I have friends who are traumatised by their family history and personal experience with female genital mutilation. Having someone force something on your body is traumatic no matter the culture, gender, race or age. If the Chinese can stop feet binding, then the Africas can stop forcing women to wear lip plates. 😢

I work with indigenous tribes in the Amazon, no joke. They want development to increase their standard of living. I work with the Achiar, Shiwiar and Shuar. These people were engaged in endless tribal warfare until as recently as the 1970's... trust me, NO ONE misses the days of head hunting... you can help indigenous people's to evolve their culture for their own benefit without exploiting them. Not super common but it does happen. THAT is respecting these people!! Should Europeans have "asked people to respect our culture" when we used to have slaves? No, it was morally wrong. So is this.
