UPDATE: You do not have to select the "programer" anymore. Just select the board. As long as you have the most current version of the Arduino IDE software it selects programer for you!

I was trying to program it for like 1 year. I saw hours of videos and read tonnes of blogs....but couldn't program it. Saw your video, done in 10 minutes. Thank you bro

Awesome! I got the example sketch working too. Such a relief since I've been tinkering with this esp8266 for a couple weeks without any solid success... till I found this video. Thanks again!

I just managed to upload code to an ESP8266 from the new Arduino 1.6.4 IDE, with the help of your video (and a bunch of others).  I can't believe it worked.  This is crazy... a web server the size of my thumbnail that can switch relays or transmit sensor data over the 'net... for about 6 bucks.  Awesome.

Thanks Ron for the great and clear tutorial, worked perfect, it's important to have a good 3.3 volts, as you pointed, i built an small board with a couple of capacitors to filter the supply, and a couple of push buttons for reset and gpio 0, works like a charm!

Hey Ron! Thanks a ton for this video! You have absolutely no idea how helpful this video has been to me, and I'm sure, even to many other makers! :) I wanted to contact you personally in case I got stuck, but seems like some Googling around sufficed! Keep up the great work man!

Thank you for your time and presentation - really helpful!! I'm building a home electricity monitoring project to check solar generated power so I can turn stuff on in the house when the panels are generating enough current over and above what we are already consuming from the public grid ie to use the residual current for something that saves me money rather than giving the residual back to the utility company.

Great job, Ron, thanks! Very informative. I only wish that you didn't skim past one piece of information that I need as a "newbie:" How to install the Mac driver into the FTDI adapter. Guess I still need to keep searching for this final piece of the puzzle...

I use professional consumer built USB to 9-pin serial cables and a proper adapter to get on the FTDI or JTAG for serial communications on board level devices.
I figured it was a lot easier to buy the proper wires and such than to buy the cheap Chinese things, solder on pins and fiddle with connections. Yes they cost more $$ but make the whole process a lot easier.

Could you put that image link into the description? Makes it a bit easier to get to. Thanks! This is extremely helpful, well done!

you were talking about an external power supply.. but in the video you cannot see what you are using.. what do you recommend to a non-plugged option? 3AA/AAA? 2AA with a step-up module? 3.7 Lipo? 9V probably not that good... other?

Hi, I was trying ESP8266 board after watching your video. But it did not work. Later, I got to know from Internet that CH_PD pin need to be connected to 3.3V and it worked. Please let me know if my connections are right?
