Dopamine Detox & The Science of *MOTIVATION*

There has been a lot of shop talk lately about the many wonders that going on dopamine detox or a dopamine fast could do for your health.

I thought this was a good opportunity to go over some neurobiology basics, explaining the real role that dopamine plays in your brain.

Dopamine isn't the reason why you choose to do things that feel good in the short term

That idea is a pretty outdated one.

Dopamine plays a more subtle role than that and is central to motivation; peaking in concentration in the brain right before commitment to an action.

In this video I go through what dopamine is, what it does and explain why some people feel it may be necessary to go on a dopamine detox/fast.

You'll also find a lengthy discussion on the role dopamine plays in addiction and what the latest research suggests may be future avenues in addiction therapy.

Happy Viewing!

I love your channel idea! So much that I have a few “critiques” that I think will improve your videos. 1. I think the frequent shoving of “please subscribe” is a bit annoying especially since it feels like a long pause from the content. Instead, maybe just add a caption instead of a whole black screen with text. 2. I think listing sources and going into more detail about studies conducted would be very beneficial for some viewers and will keep intellectually curious people engaged. 3. Add more images and captions and more enthusiasm/speed. The big youtubers usually have a faster pace since most people are used to that “overstimulation” I suppose. I think your content could appreciate more excitement from a channel like this. Look at channels like crashcourse or scishow for examples. I’m definitely subscribing and want to see your channel grow since I think we need more channels like you on YouTube.

Well done, you say this video is long but it really flew by for me! You have an enjoyable and relaxing style and provided a clear, practical, and positive message with a little side humor. Very nice, subbed!

I would most definitely try a dopamine fast, mostly because I waste loads of time on social networks (don't we all...). I don't think quitting cold turkey would work because they do give you a chance to stay connected with friends, but imposing strong limits on time spent online does sound sensible!

I had not heard of a dopamine fast, but it makes sense. I have chronic depression and I really appreciate a good explanation of how neurotransmitters work. As much as I have been on SNRIs and had transcranial magentic stimulation, I didn't understand this much about dopamine. I hope you do more on the other neurotransmitters.

The reverb makes it much more work to listen to you. I gave up 1/3 of way through video.

Could you please explain more practically how to "dopamine detox"? E.g. what activities should you specifically not do on social media. Is checking the news OK?
P.s. the sounds are often too distracting, consider lowering the volume.
