SUMMARY of HOW TO dopamine detox for those who missed the second part of this stream. Dr K recommends:

1. AT LEAST 2 WEEKS of dopamine detox
2. Get ready for boredom in the two weeks, schedule things to fill your day to avoid boredom
3. Go for walks, read a book, clean your house/room, go grocery shopping, cook your meals, exercise.
4. SCHEDULED and ACTIVE media consumption is allowed like scheduled watching 1 movie a day, or listening to music.
5. PASSIVE mindless consumption is NOT allowed: ie scrolling social media platforms, binge watching netflix/youtube/twitch.
6. No video games, uninstall to help against temptation. Board game night with friends is allowed. DND over discord is allowed.
7. Socialize with friends, better yet, have them do it with you, tell them what youre doing so you can keep each other accountable.
8. Be careful when hanging out with friends over discord. Catch yourself when youre mindlessly opening tabs and stop.
9. Learn a new skill! Code, learn words in a new language, become a jiu jitsu master.
10. Don't beat yourself up about it! If you make a mistake during the detox what's important is you keep going back on track instead of giving up because you "might as well cause you already fucked up".

In my experience with ADHD, it's less that I only care to do low-effort-low-reward things and more that I have difficulty distinguishing how much effort something "takes" and what the reward is "worth."

This really can be linked to trauma too. I get motivated to avoid a lot of things because it feels safe. Things that are unpredictable don’t feel safe for me. I developed depression, anxiety and severe isolating. To deal with a bad household I found it very comforting to be in bed all day and scroll. I didn’t want to do things other people do, I was picked on in school too so it felt easier to not leave the house at all, talk to new people etc. This was triggering but very enlightening. I think i’m going to speak to a professional.

I love that you went on a tear about the use of the word "just". As silly as it may sound to some people, I was in a deep depression a while back and someone I trusted greatly was attempting to counsel me a little bit, and said I needed to "just get over it" that involved that word and it cut deep. It was very frustrating and through a great amount of reflection on the event, I was able to figure out why that line was so toxic for me, but I've been a huge proponent of removing the word "just" from my amateur counseling that I offer to people.

Sorry for the huge tangent, but that resonated with me when you said that.

Love thisss. I just recently made the distinction that dopamine facilitates action, as opposed to causes pleasure.

Ive been recently diagnosed with ADHD, and have been so interested in how dopamine can fuck me essentially.

Its like, sometimes my brain is doing its own thing, finding stimulation to hyperfocus on, and suck out every bit of dopamine it can, and Im just along for the ride.

Theres a sort of crippling...thing to not being able to force yourself to do something
