Required viewing for anyone teaching themselves to draw! Gesture drawings are a foundation exercise that trains the artist to identify the essential movement and physics in a depiction of a body. Notice how Jess nails down the relationship of the shoulders to the hips- usually tilted in opposite angles- right away with just a simple mark or two. We also noticed that Jess doesn't cheat on her time limit, because that's a huge part of getting the benefit of the exercise. Can't wait for part 2!

Tbh when I don't feel like drawing or like having an art block, I always come to her and watch her urban sketching videos. So satisfying and motivating. Thank you so much for uploading and motivating us🫂❤️

To be able to create a piece within 1 and 3 minutes is such a great way to improve your skill and I am in awe as to how amazing your ‘messy’ sketches look. I have to also say you have an awesome talent and a wonderful teaching style. Continue to develop your skill and inspire others. What you do is truly incredible xx

I needed this. I've been struggling with drawing people for some time and I think this is the start I needed. Thanks Jess ❤️

Every video you make is so informative, helpful and inspiring. Sometimes I really feel like my art isn’t good enough because it’s not perfect. But every time I watch your videos, it sparks and fuels my creative energy. You motivate so many of us and we all appreciate you so much! ❤ Thank you Jess

It was so fun to see how much my figures improved from the first until the last. I have never practice drawing people that much because it is a process that intimidates me but this really was so fun and I cannot wait to do it again soon! The biggest challenge for me was making the hands and feet not look so wonky haha!

I have a friend who writes chidrens' books. She wants to get into ilustration. Your dris, practice, and positive vibes are just what she needs. I love this.

This really takes me back to Freshman Foundation in art school. I was the tense kid in class who could never just relax and draw, but it was exercises like this one that allowed me to draw from the soul and not the brain. I'm going to pull out my sketchbook today thanks to this video. Also, how are you not distracted by the views outside your windows? That is a beautiful place to sit and draw!

I tried making one small painting for each day. And I also noticed a progress in each one. I developed various techniques on how to ensure the skin tone matches, what hue or color to add first, etc.

I haven't tried figure sketching, but I am inspired to do this after watching your works, Jess. Thank you, this is such an encouraging and reflective video.

Dear Jess. I just want to thank you for this new series and to say how excited I am to follow along with you on this journey. I am a senior who is delving into fine art for the first time in my life. I am searching for my "voice, " or my style as an artist, but I know that no matter where I end up, I need a good foundation in drawing and I know you will help me along with that, through your videos and positive encouragement. I am just up the road from you in WPB, and I hope our paths may cross someday. Cheers!

Your videos have that thing of making me feel like I'm back in art school. You have an interesting voice that's rather encouraging me to want to try out new exercises I never thought were necessary but here I am pencils and paper out ready to get down to business. I really enjoyed this video. Thank you 🙏
