Great to hear about VW' advancing electric motor technology. Thanks Sam. Usually IC engines have to trade power and efficiency, as you stated. However, since you asked, I do remember when both were improved at the same time. Circa 1987, fuel injection became standard equipment on most engines, instead of being a pricy option only used for expensive cars. This resulted in a big increase in efficiency (miles per gallon), and also power at the same time.

VW really developed that in-house. they understood that in the EV space they share the same drive trains over a wide range of models and brands (even ford). that is very different to combustion engines where you have much more variants.
by understanding this, they thought it would be a good idea to develop it in house.
at the same time they can keep 100% of the profit.
regarding mercedes, they invested in the company Yasa, who make a highly efficient axial magnetic flux motor which is already in the eqxx.

As an MEB driver my number one ask would not be more power. Fix the charging. The claimed charging curve is a myth. I suspect a lack of battery preconditioning. When I buy my next EV next year it won’t be MEB based for this reason alone.

It's great to see that regardless of their flaws Volkswagen is making a real effort to get good ❤

I'd wait for the ID 2 to see if they redesign the chassis to be lighter. Also see if they use newer batteries. And my third wish is for a heat pump, because I live in upstate New York, snow country. My 4th wish is for no stupid gadgets and useless crap like sunroof. I've got $25K in my piggy bank, waiting.

Always interesting content, Sam. As a male and knowing what pressure must be upon you, as a hairy-arsed Scotsman, big hugs and thoughts with you, as well as your wife and family at this time. Stay strong, pal.

Great to hear that they are addressing one of the weaknesses of their EV's. But that platform sounds like a bottleneck in product evolution. Thanks Sam. Big hug to Shanna.

Their very underpowered electric cars? Even current VW EVs have enough power for transportation purposes. 9 seconds from 0-100 km/h is slow? Maybe in dragstrip but not on public road

Well, if BYD recommends servicing the oil then it has to be serviced.
Many ice manufacturers make sealed transmissions (and no dipsticks) and warrant them die the life of the vehicle. If you read the warranty it is something like 4 years or 60, 000 miles, etc. however most mechanics recommend servicing that fluid after 60, 000 miles.

I don’t know how the Tesla gears work but at some point if there is oil inside it will have to be serviced.

Great to hear you praise Volkswagen for the first time. Their motors are already quieter than those of Tesla, and now would have increased power, 0-100 kph in 5 secs, maybe...

EV’s already have plenty of power especially compared to ICE cars for the same money. What we need is better charging/range and lower prices. More power is irrelevent.

Improving all electric motors for everyone from now on, great news.

I would not be surprised the ID2 lands the revised ID4 motor w/200hp equiv would be a good fit.

Electric motors run at or over 90% efficiency (input/output power) with the remaining 10% being heat given off from I2R losses, windage, and bearing friction. (ICE are engines arearound 30% efficient) ABB recently recorded the highest ever efficiency for synchronous motors with a value of 99 per cent

The BYD requirement is only at the behest of Australian dealers. It's a way for them to con some money out of the consumer, since EVs need very little service.

I thought the id2 was on a new platform that was lighter, would really make more sense to move the 3 to that platform

Great review Sam !! Best !! I'm very anxious to see the inverter, VW Motors are pretty cool. Check out the Sandy Monroe ID.4 Motor tear down, pretty interesting review, Sandy also had a number of great comments about the design.
