After what seems like months of being teased which cars wrapped in disguise, we finally get to see Volkswagen’s flagship electric car. And since we’ve made the trip all this way, they let us have a go behind the wheel too.

The ID.7 might not look particularly exciting, but it could be very good news for fans of electric VWs. Why? Because as well as not being yet another electric SUV, it has a big battery, big range and the next-generation of infotainment in there - which is probably the biggest weak spot of any VW ID car.

The ID.7 is something of a traditionalist - it’s what we used to call in the old days ‘a saloon car’ – although, like the Polestar 2 and BMW i4, it actually has a hatchback.

But a lower car with a long wheelbase makes sense for electric cars. The big gap between the wheels means more passenger leg space, and a lower roofline and smaller frontal area makes it more aerodynamic. That slipperiness means more efficiency.

VW is saying that the ID.7 with the biggest 86kWh battery should manage 435 miles of WLTP range. So easily 300-plus of real-world ability. At nearly 5-metres long, it’s the same size as a Mercedes EQE or Nio ET7, but with a basic price of around £55,000 will be significantly cheaper. Its size lifts it above rivals such as the Tesla Model 3 too.

I quite liked the looks of the estate version. It's just a pity most of the traditional car companies are not producing affordable electric cars. £60000 is just ridiculous for a middle of the road saloon car.

I always get overwhelmed by the VW car designs, they keep their cars simple, elegant, and futuristic. Now ID.7 is definitely a superb car from the VW fleet. I know this is the era of SUVs, but the long-run player is a saloon/sedan.

I like the iD.7 precisely because it doesn't shout out to the world "I'm an EV and I'm doing great things!" Its rather reserved look and elegant appearance works for me - I'm very excited when the configurator goes online and then the pricing will create facts for me!

The car looks taller than wider. It looks as if it was designated by engineers, not artists. There is no falling in love at first sight (at least for me).

I can't help but to wonder why they started with the saloon? Enter the estate market and you are definately not in a crowded market and those things just make much more sense.

I’m in the market for an EV. ID-7 looks like having a lot of good things we’ve been waiting for but I just can’t get over the shape & look of it. It looks weird. A squashed form of ID-4 you mentioned was spot on. Looks like a mutant, still in progress. Couple years ago, VW came up with ID-4 that I thought it was cute and beautiful, very appealing to masses, and then ID-7!?
VW hasn’t nailed it yet for me. I take an ID-4 equipped like ID-7 any day. Thanks for the info. I really enjoyed it.

I would certainly be interested in the estate. All manufacturers are so fixated with SUVs and hatchbacks, etc.
