The ID3 would make a good small family car in the UK but is north of $35k, but can be bought in China for $16k. Consumers are foolish but not prepared for this monstrous gouge for EVs. China is going to wipe the floor on sales if they market at attractive price points.

And in the real world:

My first car was a 1959 VW Beetle - I would still have one of these over any EV VW

I currenty own a VW UP! which is a reincarnation of the VW Beetle. Great simple cars with no high tech bullshit.

If I was considering buying an ID7-size car (in Europe), the fact that it was offered at a ~50% lower price in China would not encourage me to buy.

When VW have to rely on Xiaopeng and SAIC for technology, why should the Chinese consumers pay a lot more for a VW? The same will happen in Europe.

ID.3 is quite popular in China. It's among the top 20 almost every month. Secret of ID.3's success (and ID.7's downfall) is price cut. Almost everyone believes that, for this lackluster new model, there will be some huge disount very soon.

VW in NZ is obscenely over-priced both to buy and to service, There will of course be ppl willing to buy the badge for the status, how strange the world is at times.

Was hoping to change my 2019 Passat GTE for a maybe a 2-3yr old Id7, however seeing as the Id7 rwd with 77kwh battery costs 70.200 Euro in my country, absolutely insane price compared to tesla and the Chinese brand, I will definitely look towards NIO, Byd and others soon

Not wanted?! It is the best ID car yet. I want one! It is roomy, comfortable at speed, charge fast and has nice range! The price is an issue for now. 👍

Battery chemistry is not everything. I'm in the hunt for a new EV and recently test-drive ID7 and rented BYD Seal for a couple of days to test it out. I know that in the past VW had issues with software but from my test drive, BYD Seal is even worse. I encountered an issue with charging . Two fast chargers failed to synchronize with BYD Seal I had to visit 3rd location to finally charge it with 1% left which was very stressful. Also BYD ride quality was mediocre at best and sound isolation was almost non-existing at high speeds. Also, Seal interior quality with scratchy plastics is not the best and some panels felt loose. On the other hand, ID7 sailed through the road hands down the most comfortable and relaxing EV which I have tested. But in Europe it comes with a hefty price tag. For me, the choice is still between Tesla model 3 and ID7. Personally I prefer ID7 interior and ride quality but I'm not sure if I can justify the premium over Tesla 3

On my first trip to China in 2015. Legacy Europeans auto makers like BMW, Mercedes VW were considered the desirable cars on the market. However BYD, was considered innovative due to the election drive train. On my next trip in late 2019, you could see the shift towards greater electrification, with BYD, however none of the Legacy brands had anything to offer.
In 2023, these Legacy brands seem so far behind, BYD & Tesla in terms of electrification, no one wants to buy out dated technology.

The problem for VW is when peoples leasing contract ends for their VW ID3, ID4 and ID5 in say 2-3 years.. cause no one wants to have that experience again and goes to another brand.

Intrusive safety systems that take command of the car is a deal breaker for me. I don't want to fight the car every time I drive it. I don't want every trip to start with me going into the software meny checking off boxes before I drive away! Make streering assist an option, not a default! And fix the cruise control not to brake the car hard out of the blue just because an adjacent road has a lower speed limit! If VW makes cars that makes drivers frustrated every time they drive them, then it should not come as a surprise that no one want's them.

Most of these companies keep aiming at the same narrow market, then wonder why there aren't enough customers to go around.
