The Gospel of Thomas contains 114 sayings of Jesus Christ and is one of the most popular Gnostic Gospels discovered at Nag Hammadi. It wasn't until 1945 and it's discovery at Nag Hammadi that scholars finally had a complete Coptic manuscript of the Gospel of Thomas. Does the Gospel of Thomas really contain authentic lost sayings of Jesus Christ? Some scholars say yes, but one thing remains certain, the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas is highly controversial. In this video we will unpack the history behind this fascinating piece of Christian history!

Love hearing about how the disciples interacted with each other! I find the feud between John and Thomas to be fascinating

I think sometimes we forget that the canonical gospels and non-canonical gospels are in conversation with each other whether in agreement or disagreement. Thanks for the insight!

Dude I love your channel, no matter my beliefs you don’t infringe on it. You come off completely based on an educational vibe. Thanks for that!

I’m truly delighted to notice that more and more insightful people approach theology and philosophy in such an interactive entertaining way!
Regarding Mary Magdalene’s becoming a male, this is obviously symbolic. Male and female represent cosmic principles, the active and the receptive, the solar and the lunar… this is all about unity. The complete human being contains and transcends this duality.
I am deeply grateful for your endeavor. Keep up your excellent work!

114 is about integrating one’s Anima/Animus. The internal feminine/masculine, representatively. To reach enlightenment, one must integrate m/f, f/m.

Great content, bro!! Keep it up!! 😁😁👏🏼👏🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼🔥🔥

So glad I found this site! You are such a talented and your presenting skills are brilliant, really keeps me interested. Thank you, regards 🇬🇧 (p.s. I made a typo and put parenting skills instead of presenting skills!😅😅😅 I would never comment on the former, you could be a Catholic priest or something eek!😅) great job thanks

As someone who considers themself Christian but doesn't gel with either Nicene Christianity or Gnostic Christianity, I consider the Gospel of Thomas a nice middle ground between the two.

That isn't to say I agree 100% with Thomas. But my experience has led me to believe that all scripture, Christian and non-Christian alike, is to be wrestled with, not accepted unconditionally or rejected wholeheartedly.

I think when Thomas talks about the light inside of us it’s in reference to the spirit that we use to develop our personal relationship with god and it was taken out so that some churches could use the Bible to control people in the sense of you have to have a priest or father pray to god for you

I concluded a while ago that they left the best bits out of the bible. It's like going to a show at the theatre and they tell the audience to go home at intermission. The show is sadly incomplete.... Nag Hamadi saved the day!

Thomas sounds like the most on the ball guy in the whole bunch. He keeps clearly saying: "I know that I don't know." It's a very Socratic thing to say.

I think the Gospel of Thomas is very interesting, it just lost out in the canonization process. The John/Thomas rivalry is fascinating.
The Gospel of Thomas seems Gnostic because salvation is through knowledge (gnosis) rather than faith

Is it just me or is this mostly Buddhist/daoist teachings? Ex: Saying #56 (21:12) is basically «He who knows, does not speak. He who speaks, does not know.» - Lao Tzu. Where one trying to grasp the flow of reality misses the whole point. but any who misses the point understands the flow... Also Saying #13 (13:30) is the basic structure of a Zen buddhist Koan

It seems to me (and Stevan Davies, one translator of the gospel) that saying 114 was tacked onto the end at a later date and was not part of the original gospel. Saying 113 talks of the kingdom being spread upon the earth and men do not see it... Kind of going full circle back to saying 3 which talks of the kingdom being within and outside of You. So it makes more sense for 113 to be the last saying as it "completes the circle" Someone at a later time

It is gnostic, as it centers the reader not on relationship with God, but on an interpretation of knowledge that makes one to be the centre of one’s own universe…
