Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease of the skin that predominantly involves scaling and inflammation. Aside from its physical manifestations, psoriasis can also result in debilitating psychological effects for those suffering with it. While conventional medicine typically treats psoriasis from the outside in, the reality is that it is an issue that comes from within, and should be treated from the inside out. Things like your genetics, diet, and environmental influences can all contribute to psoriasis.

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Todd LePine to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating psoriasis. They explain why addressing factors such as gut health, immunity, heavy metals, and more can all be instrumental in healing psoriasis.

Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast.

Great job Doc. I've been suffering from psoriasis now for 13 years and I just recently went vegan, got rid sugars, gluten, and all junk foods. Eating leafy greens and fruits only. Taking cod liver, fish oil, and other super food supps. I'm on day 2 and I'm starting to see a bit of a difference already. Wish me luck.

Thank you so much for this, we live in Canada and I have shared this with my son. He suffers horribly from psoriatic arthritis and is being treated with biologics. It initially almost completely cleared his psoriasis that was over half his body with 48 hours but now he is struggling again, especially with his joints. He has just done a 3 day fast and is adding food back slowly, one by one. He is such a special young man and it breaks my heart to see him suffer with this. There is a genetic link on the paternal side.

....Cleared lifelong psoriasis 13 years ago using diet, vegetable juicing and supplements. Probably one of the greatest achievements of my life, given how stubborn it was in the 40 years prior to that.

This podcast is straight up truth. Paoriasis is a root gut/digestive problem, not a root skin problem. And they are right the psychological effects of psoriasis are horrible. Amazing podcast.

OMG! I could be that person discussed at minute 13. Severe acne as a teen had me on tetracycline for 18 months. Totally destroyed my gut with issues (chronic) taking the purple pill for years, vitamin D was 8, gallbladder removed in 2000, psoriasis developed in 2001. Nothing had helped me for 22 plus years. Psoriasis only on lower legs and elbows/hands. Recently, I began to treat this as vascular and began a course of exercise on my stationary bike with MARKED improvement. This made me realize that the medical establishment failed me on all counts. I'm just going to now avoid gluten and choose better fruit options....and help myself.

I have psoriasis for close to 30 years. With all due respect to all doctors research, i will tell you what works for me and not many people know if I really have psoriasis now. I take early morning sunshine daily for 30 minutes, apply only coconut oil in body daily before taking bath, eat only vegetarian diet, consume no liquor or tobacco, pray daily, donate monthly, sleep for 8 hours daily and do not take any other medicine. I am a software engineer and not a doctor but following a simple process above worked for me. Psoriasis may never go away or some day it will - accept it, follow basic process and stay happy. You will be much better in a month - try it. If you get better, please help someone else.

I am in sustained remission of Rheumatoid Arthritis. I am not on any medication anymore. Thanks to gut microbiome replacement, using with proper antibiotics, probiotics and elimination diet. My recovery took two years and the duration depends on the patient. Everyone please listen to these guys. Holistic doctors are real heroes!

I have had psoriases since I was 14 years old. I am 70 years old and I have been seeing the same dermatologist since 1994. He has never ordered a blood test or maybe I just don’t remember if he ever did. I’ve often wondered about that and I’ve come to the conclusion, recently, that he just wants me to keep coming back. I am ashamed to say that I was a nurse and although I’ve had psoriases for so many years I believe I’ve been brain washed thinking that people with psoriases suffer from the skin only. It’s refreshing to hear you both so interested in psoriases. A fresh take on the subject, to me anyway!

Ive had paoriasis for over 11 years now. I cant control it. Its always getting worse and im struggling to cope. I cannot visit hospitals and seek treatment due to major PTSD. I was "treated" in 2012 with a 5 day cream therapy crap. I was wrapped up for 23 hours a day, and in the off hour i jad moist towels... By day 5 my skin was completely burnt to a 2nd degree and i could barely move. The pain was unbarable and i was informed there was a problem, and this should never have happened. Since then i have not been able to put any trust into professionals to treat me as im scared ill be burnt or even worse. I will be trying the diet side of things, clean up my gut and see how i go. I really need this to work. Theres not alot more hope for me

As someone who's been battling psoriasis (~20-30% coverage) for 2/3rds of my life, this is the single best source of advice I've found to deal with my condition. Biologics were necessary in my case to get things under control, but these topics discussed help KEEP it under control.

I have psoriasis. I have been on steroids for too long and they just clear the surface temporarily. I was on a biologic Tremfya, and it worked well, but my vision was deteriorating. I was seeing streaks and my vision was blurry, and it was difficult for my eyes to focus, so I got off of it. Listening to you two speak has me confident I can finally cure this. I will be changing everything. Thanks Doctors

Cured my psoriasis. Havent had a single spot on my body for 2 and a half years now. I eliminated ALL grains from my diet and almost all processed foods ( the ones that contain grains anyway - and that's over 90 percent of them). Cut down on sugar too. I eat all animal products, vegetables and fruit.

Thanks so much, I have been on methotrexate for almost 24 yrs low dosage to not affect my liver, I will definitely do the gut cleanse and rid of gluten, already do not do sugars, I am a stressful person, one Dr. recommended a nice pair of walking tennis shoes and go for walks, as she suffered through stress during her Doctorate studies and it helped her to manage her stress. Below someone suggested cycling I will be doing that as well. Best of wishes to all this pod cast was awesome. Thanks again Doc's...

Reminds me of one of my children. Despite being breastfed, had eczema on his skin at 4 months. He would wake himself scratching at night. His face became all red and often bleeding. I'd find a cream that works, then, it would stop working. Finally, I brought him to a nutritionist. We cut out the gluten, dairy and sugar, like suggested in this video. We also cut out Orange and tomato, as apparently, they can aggravate itching. I also used 3 different natural creams and changed them every 3 days. I used a spoon to remove the cream, to prevent bacteria in the tub of cream. This was very effective. His whole body cleared. Then, I discovered when he was 3 that he was allergic to peanuts and salmon. When he tried them, he immediately spat them out, and his face was covered in what looked like nettle stings. I kept him on this diet until he was 7 years old. At this point, we also tried reintroducing peanuts, later salmon. No reaction to peanuts, and just some hives from salmon. We were advised to reintroduce both so he wouldn't develop severe allergies, requiring EpiPen. Apparently, 7 is a key age, or so I was told. He now eats normally and has lovely skin.

My Rheumatologist's office plays videos in the waiting room about avoiding *inflammatory foods and the importance of eating healthy. Yet, when I told him I would be seeing a dietitian to help me with this endeavour, he scoffed at it and said I'd be better off spending my money at weight watchers, and then wrote me a prescription for a second medication. It felt so defeating. But call me crazy, food journaling points to things like nightshades before a flare up. Avoiding dairy for a month cleared up my psoriasis better than any cream or medication ever have. Eating red meat causes digestive distress. I think it's obvious to me that I need to jump in with both feet and try a complete AIP elimination diet once and for all.

My psoriasis has almost completely healed for the first time in over three decades, after I tackled hyperinsulinemia & metabolic syndrome by adopting the ketogenic diet as a therapeutic intervention. After six months, dropping 35lbs, my BMI is almost normal -- I'm 4lbs overweight, now. I've sinced switched to a low-carb diet, as I do not believe keto to be viable or sustainable as a lifestyle diet. While I have researched and consumed many supplements, I primarily take Vitamins D, K2 and cod liver oil (provides A, D & omega-3 fatty acids.)

If there is one thing that you must try, it is going sugar-free. I quit drinking soda pop entirely, switched from beer to vodka & carbonated water. These two changes, by themselves, made a huge difference!
