One of my friends died of pancreatic cancer. He kept going to the hospital with chest pains, thinking he was having a heart attack, but they'd blow it off as a panic attack.

By the time someone took him seriously enough to do a thorough check up it was too late. He died about a month later.

RIP Ed. You were a good dude.

I heard about this recently. Having all the money in the world can't make you immune to pseudoscience and misinformation.

I used to be all about natural remedies, until I got cancer myself, adenocarcinoma endometrioid. Then I just wanted it OUT of me! I had a total hysterectomy, and I'm cured now. Grateful!

REMEMBER. Alternative medicine that works is just called medicine.

Steve Jobs is the answer to the claim that there is no harm in alternative medicine.

Herbs are great, but im sticking with the science. Just goes to show how we can delude ourselves.

My dad had bog-standard Stage 4 pancan and I can't tell you how irrationally angry I was at Steve Jobs for delaying perfectly reasonable medical treatment. I'd have given anything for more time with my dad; I was lucky to have 17 months.

Remember when he bought a house in TN so the wait time is less for a transplant, and for his recovery

When I announced that I had cancer, I had many friends suggest a host of supplements over surgery and chemotherapy. While I’m always grateful for their concerns, if being plant based and eating mostly whole foods for over 20 years didn’t stop the cancer, I doubt supplements would do much of anything. Fortunately my cancer was caught early because I had doctors who listen to me even when they thought it was something else. They were able to cut it all out and then I received chemo and will be starting radiation just as precautionary measures

I had a neuroendocrine tumor in my right, mainstem bronchial tube. By the time they figured it out, it was blocking 90% of that airway. I was given 1 dose of octreotide, a chemo drug designed for neuroendocrine tumors, before having major surgery to resect my bronchial tube. From diagnosis to successful surgery was less than 3 months. I now have a scar that is over 12 inches long that wraps around my shoulder blade and the side of my ribs. I am also missing a section of my 5th rib where it is covered by my shoulder blade. I am now 8 years cancer free.

I'm torn with chemo. When my father got sick the Drs told him the meds help 50% of the people treated with it. They did not tell him the other 50% die from it. Each dose of chemo was like gasoline on a wildfire. The cancer spread everywhere. Not sure if I would want to be treated if I had cancer. I believe quality over quantity any day.

Natural or holistic treatments may be a fine addition to evidence based medicine, so long as they don't interfere with it. Take your antioxidants and align your chakras, but get the chemo and surgery first.

I take herbs for arthritis, liver support, and to help my diabetic meds. I would NEVER take any for cancer! Somethings you just don't mess with.

It’s so sad that so many people are talked out of treatable cancer and into terminal cancers.

You can absolutely eat lots of vegetables, listen to music that relaxes you and get massages. Please also take your medicine and get your therapy. You can do both!

Many doctors or cancer charities will even help you decide which supportive treatments will help you and compliment your medical plans. In my local area complimentary therapies are even offered by the hospital for cancer patients to help them feel more relaxed, less nauseous and generally cared for.

I’m a major proponent for natural medicine and generally prefer it to just about any over-the-counter treatment. But of course, my rule of thumb goes something along the lines of “Honey and lemon for sore throat, antibiotics for salmonella.” Yeah, there are teas I drink that sometimes help with my allergies but it isn’t as effective as Zyrtec. I know that no blend of plants is gonna replace my inhaler. And if I ever need to get my appendix removed or something, you bet your ass I’m going under the knife and scalpel. Sure, out ancestors wouldn’t have survived if it weren’t for natural medicine. But they typically died before they turned 25, and I’d personally like to have a midlife crisis one day.
