Rumplestiltskin has one of the best backstories in TV I've ever seen. Everything new we learn about his past just fits so perfectly with what we've learned about him and makes him much deeper and even more complex a character.

The fact that I felt like throwing up because of his screams, and the way I could sort of feel how much that hurt. Which just shows how great of an actor Robert Carlyle is

I love the way Rumple shouts, "A STRONG name!"

Rumple sacrificed not only his leg but also his honor so that his son wouldn't grow up without father. That really takes some courage. And he was also honest with his wife, by admitting that he broke his leg himself, and not trying to blame someone else, even though she was so pissed off at him. So, where is the coward? I can't see any...

I wonder if before this scene, one of the producers said to Rumpel "Break a leg."

Robert Carlyle is the perfect role for Rumpelstiltskin! I just love his accent and his performance! He was trying to be a good father and being with his family he doesn't want to go to war!

The word "coward" is his Achilles heel. If it weren't for that word, he would not have been "The Dark One". If people had not dubbed him a coward, he would not have made the choices he had made. When people tell you something enough, you may start believing it. Bravery and cowardice are extremely opinionated words.

So he wasn't really a coward. He just didn't want his his son to be fatherless . I think hat is brave. :)

he's not a coward, it took some stones to smash his own foot like that, damn

In a way, it was perversely brave of him to cripple himself so he could leave the army and be with his family.  I see nothing cowardly about that.

He was AFRAID FOR HIS SON. Hell, if I learned that my son may grow up without me, I'd smash my leg too if that would mean he'd have me. And she did seem magical(hell she had eyes on her palms) so that would be a clue she's an actual seer. And there was a good chance he'd die. And Bae was actually born. He had every reason to do this. It isn't cowardice, more like intelligence.

"You did this because a /SEER/ told you to do it?"
"You left me, let me go to jail, because /PINOCCHIO/ told you to?"

Oh, Baelfire. You and your father are really travelling down the same road in a lot of ways. XD

he does so well with slowing his accent down too! I had a hard time understanding him in commentary. :)

Yes, he indeed did. As Charming said, sometimes being a hero is knowing when not to run into the fire.

You know lots of women and children pray to have a husband/father who would do that for them. Maybe not break your leg but willing to do anything for love and family.

Me either. I think he showed more inner strength than anyone else

Exactly my thoughts. People really should think twice before using those words. Because they may come with a price...

Deserting a battle because a seer tells you that you might probably be killed by ogres is about as cowardly as wearing a heavy coat or even not going outside when the forecast calls for a blizzard. In other words, not cowardly at all. Honestly, there is no logical victory possible when using swords and catapults against enemies 10x your size. If anything, choosing to go into battle is not bravery but sheer stupidity. Now, if you have Gatling ballistas or Juggernauts, that would be different.
