It’s nearly a week since the Philippines were struck by a typhoon, the strongest this year.

At least 375 people lost their lives and hundreds of thousands have been left without shelter.

The Red Cross says there is “carnage” in many areas with no power, no communications and very little water.

One of the worst affected areas was the tourist island of Siargao.

Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Howard Johnson on the island.

I will pray for you Phillipines, may everything gets better as soon as possible. It is heartbreaking to see people who had houses just a week ago, and now they have nothing. Stay strong my fellow Filipinos, love from Kyrgyzstan.

I am one of the survivor of the said typhoon Rai, locally named Odette, and It was really a traumatic experience😭I am currently living here in the island of Negros Oriental, specifically in Bolisong, Manjuyod Negros Oriental. Sad to say, our island was one of the island most affected by this typhoon. And now, it's 7days after the typhoon severely damaged here and still we are in aching heart. We are not in good condition. We don't have water/clean water to drink, foods to eat, shelter to rely on or live on because everything we have were wash off. A lot of us here are now homeless. Still, a lot of dead bodies are missing out and need an immediate response to recover everything has left out by this typhoon. And now, we don't know where to start and get to start, too. 😭

I experienced so many strong typhoons when I was still living in Eastern Samar and Manila in the 26 years of my life in the Philippines. I know how scary and depressing it is to live in a place that is prone to typhoons every year. You are right, it's a yearly routine. I am living now in this country (Canada) that is so blessed and there are no natural disasters such as typhoons, earthquakes, and volcano eruptions like in my home country.

I feel sad and it's heartbreaking to those who lost their lives (RIP), were injured, livelihood has been obliterated, and are homeless. I feel their pain and struggle, the scarcity of food, and clean drinking water. I experienced all of those many times whenever a very strong typhoon hit our place in Eastern Samar.

And then the next day we wake up and pick up the pieces, the debris, clean the whole surrounding, fix our plantations, repair, and rebuild our houses.

Living in these kinds of places is not for faint-hearted humans. But even the stronger people who encounter this calamity for the rest of their lives can sometimes feel hopeless and literally devastated. But no matter how strong the typhoon is and knocks us down, we always rise and get back up.

We Pinoys here in Canada are with you always, we pray for you and we will help and donate whatever we can. Be strong kababayans and God bless the Philippines.

Sadly Typhoons are predictable but there is no infrastructure built knowing this occurs every year.

It's heartbreaking to see people there without getting enough aid quickly.

Stadiums and covered courts are actually terrible sanctuaries when there's a typhoon because high pressures from the wind cause the ceilings to collapse. However there aren't many storm shelters available here in the Philippines so this is the best we could do.

I hope people will help us build stronger homes for the typhoons. Most ppl who love in coastal areas here in the philippines are made of wood and cheap glass materials. It would be expensive but it would be a great help to have a house that is typhoon proof. 😭

For disasters like these, donate on top of your prayers. Donations are more pertinent to the survival of people affected all over the world.

How could you have a system when the core system itself (the people) were also affected?
