I am an iOS software developer and have an Intel 16 inch MacBook Pro provided to me by work and I have had an M1 MacBook Air with the 8 cores and upgraded to 16GB RAM. In many tasks the M1 MBA is faster or matches the 16 MBP. The battery life is also so much better as well. It also has the benefits of being more portable, it is lighter and it also works great with my 34 inch ultra wide 1440p monitor and it remains quiet and I haven't noticed any throttling. Not only that, I got this M1 MBA with 16GB RAM for around £1500, my 16 MBP costs over double that. Previously, if you wanted to get into iOS development you had to get a fully specced MacBook Pro, whereas now the cost of entry is much more affordable. The same is true for photographers and video editors, or just people wanting a computer in general, you are no longer sacrificing for the lower cost.

If you are doing some serious video editing or something and you need sustained loads then the M1 MBP or M1 Mini probably makes more sense, or if you are a pro then wait for the next generation of Apple Silicon when it comes to the MacBook Pro 16, iMac, iMac Pro and even the Mac Pro, which will probably have more cores, more ports etc. Also, by that time, most apps will have been ported to Apple Silicon by then. On the one hand, it is incredible what the M1 Macs are capable of and it brings more powerful computers to the average consumers, but it was not really aimed at the pros who use an iMac Pro or something, but it does offer a lot of promise for the future of Apple Silicon and Intel should be very worried if more PCs follow Apple and start moving more towards ARM.

I always wanted a MacBook Air because of its weight, design and price. But I always ended up buying a Pro because I needed the extra power and also because of its superior screen. Now for the first time I felt it was worth buying the Air. It’s supposed to arrive tomorrow. Can’t wait to try it out.

I got the pro because of the slightly better battery life, screen and sound and because the air wasn’t available and didn’t want to wait. Also I like the build quality of the pro more. Feels more solid.

I have been using a MacBook Pro 2012 since 2012 just cause it was no issue I just got the air 16gb m1 and it is GREAT I Use it for music production and I was never able to edit ever and I cut a 10 min short movie with no issue only issue is I should of got the 16 in one for more screen space until I get a screen But so far 2 days in no issue

I think if they offered the base as a 12gb ram like some of the windows ones this computer would be perfect. 8gb is a little tight for consistent workflow
